Not yet. Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have enabled people in research studies to control digital actions from neural signals, and experiments have used stimulation to evoke recognizable visual forms. But decoding commands and sending visual information back to the brain are separate challenges. The evidence does not show a general-purpose system that lets people routinely do without conventional displays and input devices.

What would it take to remove both devices?

A computer needs both input and output. A BCI decoder handles input: it records neural activity, extracts signal features, and maps them to commands. Visual stimulation addresses output: it attempts to convey information to the nervous system so a person perceives it. Success at one direction does not solve the other.

Route What it does What a demonstration establishes
Neural decoding Maps recorded brain activity to computer commands, such as cursor or motor control. A participant can perform a particular task under the tested conditions; this is not evidence that the system reads arbitrary thoughts.
Visual stimuli for a BCI Uses visual signals, such as EEG responses to stimuli, to support a control task. It may enable control without implanted recording, but the visual-tracking example discussed below still uses a spatially encoded visual stimulus.
Visual-cortex stimulation Attempts to convey information through electrically evoked visual percepts called phosphenes. Experiments can evoke recognizable forms, but that is not equivalent to a natural or screen-like image.

How far can neural decoding go?

One participant controlled virtual fingers and a quadcopter

In a 2025 Nature Medicine study, Willsey and colleagues recorded multiunit activity from two 96-channel silicon microelectrode arrays implanted in the hand area of the participant’s left precentral gyrus. A neural network mapped spike-band power to virtual finger velocities. It continuously decoded three finger groups, with the thumb represented in two dimensions, for four total degrees of freedom. The participant was one 69-year-old man with tetraplegia enrolled in the BrainGate2 pilot clinical trial; he used the decoded finger positions to control a virtual quadcopter.

In the study’s target task, the reported average acquisition rate was 76 targets per minute, and average completion time was 1.58 ± 0.06 seconds. These are results from that experimental task and participant—not a general typing speed, a performance guarantee, or evidence of a retail system. The demonstration shows that useful digital control can be decoded; it does not show unrestricted thought-reading or replacement of ordinary computer input for the general public.

Accuracy depends on the task

A 2025 systematic review by Lim and colleagues covered 93 studies involving 214 patients, with a literature search through April 13, 2024. It reported these median task accuracies:

Task category Median accuracy Interquartile range (IQR)
Cursor control 76.00% 21.2
Motor tasks 80.00% 23.3
Communication tasks 93.27% 15.3

These are medians across studies in different task categories, not the probability that any BCI command will be correct. The review describes software advances including recurrent neural networks and recording approaches including intravascular stentrodes. Its figures should be read in the context of the tasks and studies included, not combined into a universal BCI score.

Why EEG visual control still may need a display

Noninvasive BCIs commonly use EEG, while invasive systems record closer to neural sources with implanted electrodes. A 2025 review by Edelman and colleagues surveys noninvasive BCI signal acquisition, feature extraction, decoding, applications, and open-source toolboxes. That broad review describes a field, not an all-purpose consumer interface.

A 2024 visual-tracking BCI study illustrates an important distinction: its interface uses spatially encoded visual stimuli. Its “projection” and decoding method support continuous control in the task; the study does not project a general computer display directly into the visual cortex. A system that relies on visual stimuli has not removed the need to present those stimuli.

Can phosphenes make a picture?

Electrical stimulation of visual cortex can evoke phosphenes—perceptions of light. A phosphene is not simply a screen pixel. To communicate useful visual information, a system would need to control where percepts appear, how they look and change over time, and how they combine.

Tracing shapes is different from displaying an image

In a 2020 Cell study, Beauchamp and colleagues dynamically stimulated visual cortex to trace shapes. Sighted and blind participants recognized letter forms; the abstract reports up to 86 forms per minute for blind participants. This supports the feasibility of experimentally evoking recognizable forms. It does not establish everyday reading, ordinary visual acuity, or a commercially available implant.

The method matters: tracing a form dynamically is not the same as assuming that simultaneous stimulation at a grid of sites will naturally combine into a coherent picture.

Models help explain percepts, not supply vision

A 2024 Scientific Reports paper by Fine and Boynton presents a computational “virtual patient” model based on the neurophysiological organization of V1. The model predicts aspects of percepts reported in earlier human cortical-stimulation studies, including their location, size, brightness, and spatiotemporal shape. The authors note that insight into the perceptual experiences produced by these implants remains limited. The model is a research tool, not evidence of a consumer prosthesis that provides ordinary-resolution vision.

What still stands between experiments and everyday use?

Peak performance in a laboratory task is only one part of a practical interface. Lim and colleagues’ invasive BCI review identifies a lack of standardized testing paradigms, portability, and chronicity as challenges that limit systems to laboratory settings and impede translation to long-term home use. A complete replacement for monitor and keyboard would also need dependable input and useful output in everyday conditions; the cited demonstrations do not establish that combination.

The evidence therefore supports research progress on both decoding and sensory feedback, but not a general-purpose computer interface that makes conventional displays and input devices unnecessary.
