Before Kansas’ Sept. 11, 2026 game against Missouri, wide receiver Cam Pickett was expected to dress and go through warmups, but that was not confirmation he would play. ESPN’s Pete Thamel, as quoted by Saturday Down South on Sept. 9, said a decision would come afterward. Kansas later reported that Pickett played only a few snaps against Missouri. The reports place that game on Friday, so the title’s reference to “Saturday” does not match the documented Missouri kickoff day.
What “going through warmups” meant for Pickett
Warmups were part of a pregame evaluation, not a declaration that Pickett was medically cleared or available for a full workload. Before Missouri, the decision on whether he would play was still pending. Kansas coach Lance Leipold had said Pickett returned to practice but “still has a ways to go,” and that he did not yet have a definitive status.
The distinction matters: practice participation, pregame warmups, a final availability decision and actual game snaps are separate stages. In Pickett’s case, the warmup expectation did not mean he would be ready for normal playing time.
Pickett’s status, game by game
| Date and opponent | Reported status | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Sept. 7, 2026: Missouri preparation | Returned to practice, but had “a ways to go”; Leipold said there was no definitive status. | Missouri was scheduled for Friday, Sept. 11. |
| Before Missouri, reported Sept. 9 | Expected to dress and warm up; decision to follow. | Saturday Down South relayed the expectation from ESPN’s Pete Thamel. It was not confirmation of clearance or playing time. |
| After Missouri | Played despite the injury. | Kansas beat reporter Henry Greenstein said Pickett appeared in only a few plays. |
| Sept. 19, 2026: Arizona State | Game-time decision. | Pickett did not play. Kansas coverage said he had accumulated six offensive snaps that season through that game. |
What was known about the injury
Kansas coverage described an unspecified injury dating to late in training camp. The Sept. 9 report characterized it as a leg injury, but the available reporting did not establish a medical diagnosis, more precise location, or timetable for recovery. Those limits make it impossible to infer from warmups alone how close Pickett was to full strength.

Leipold’s Sept. 7 comments, reported by KUsports.com, were: “Bam did not practice today, Cam was out there, still has a ways to go,” and, “So I really don’t have a status yet on them, but trying to be hopeful on both.”
Pickett’s previous-season production
In 2025, Pickett recorded 45 receptions, 476 receiving yards and three touchdowns for Kansas, according to KUsports.com and the Sept. 9 report citing Thamel. Those are past-season totals; they do not establish his 2026 availability or predict how much he could play while managing an injury.

Why the Saturday wording is unclear
The sourced warmup expectation concerned the Missouri game, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 11, 2026. A later report placed Pickett’s next game-time decision on Saturday, Sept. 19, against Arizona State, where he did not play. The reporting does not establish which date the headline’s “Saturday” refers to, so it should not be treated as a verified account of Pickett warming up on a Saturday.
