Australian sprinter Cameron “Cam” McEvoy won the men’s 50m freestyle at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Baku on 1 October 2026, clocking 20.22 seconds in a 25m pool. The swim broke the World Cup record and puts him in contention for a wildcard place at December’s World Short Course Championships in Beijing—but his selection has not been confirmed.
McEvoy’s Baku swim broke the World Cup record
McEvoy touched first in 20.22 seconds. World Aquatics says that lowered the previous Swimming World Cup record, 20.31, set by Canada’s Josh Liendo in 2025. The official Baku results identify the event as a 25m-pool race; this is a short-course World Cup record, not McEvoy’s long-course world record. World Aquatics’ report on the race quotes McEvoy saying: “It was good. 11 years since my personal best, so I think I’m due for one,” and, “20.2 – I’m relatively close to that sub-20 which would be really nice, so it’s a good start to the Tour.”

All three times are from the Baku 25m-pool final, as reported by World Aquatics. Niewold described racing McEvoy and Kornev as “an honour” and said he was pleased to reach the podium with them.

Can McEvoy qualify for the Beijing championships?
Yes, a wildcard remains possible, but the Baku win does not by itself confirm McEvoy’s place. Under the World Aquatics wildcard criteria, a swimmer must finish in the top three of an individual final and achieve an A standard at one of the three World Cup tour stops. Each member federation can enter up to three additional swimmers through this route. McEvoy’s Baku victory meets the placing requirement; the available announcements do not establish that his wildcard entry has been formally approved.

Why he was not on Australia’s initial roster
Swimming Australia announced 24 swimmers for Beijing after its domestic short-course trials. McEvoy missed those trials and was not named in that initial squad. The team announcement included six rookies. His absence from the roster does not rule out the separate World Cup wildcard route. Swimming Australia’s squad announcement lists the selected team.
What happens next on the Silk Road Tour?
The 2026 World Cup’s Silk Road Tour moves from Baku to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on 8–10 October, then to Astana, Kazakhstan, on 15–17 October. Those are the remaining opportunities within this three-stop tour for swimmers to meet the wildcard criteria.
