Yes. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022) supports cross-platform multiplayer across PlayStation, Xbox and PC. A player on PS4 or PS5 can match with friends on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S or PC, provided everyone is playing the compatible online version and has the required platform service. Fans clearly made crossplay a major launch-era demand, but available statements do not prove that a specific fan campaign directly caused Activision or Infinity Ward to add it.
What Modern Warfare II is and when it launched
Activision identifies Modern Warfare II as an Infinity Ward first-person shooter released on October 28, 2022. Its official description combines a globe-trotting single-player campaign, competitive multiplayer and a narrative-driven, co-op Special Ops experience. PlayStation and Xbox listings cover the console generations, while the PC release completes the major platform lineup.
Activision’s product page summarizes the team focus with the line “The ultimate weapon is Team.” That teamwork extends online across hardware ecosystems rather than stopping at a console family.

“Cross-platform” here means crossplay: different hardware platforms enter the same online matchmaking pool. It does not mean that buying one copy automatically gives you a license on every platform.

Did fans cause the feature?
Launch-era coverage shows that players were actively asking whether Modern Warfare II would support crossplay and cross-generation play. Crossplay lets a group stay together when one friend owns a PlayStation, another an Xbox and another a PC, so it became an important buying and compatibility question.
The evidence supports saying that fan interest created demand and public attention. It does not include a named statement from Activision or Infinity Ward saying a fan campaign directly led to implementation. “Thanks to fans” is therefore best understood as demand-driven context, not a documented cause-and-effect announcement.

Crossplay is not the same as cross-buy
Modern Warfare II has been described as supporting cross-platform progression, meaning account progress can follow a player between supported platforms when the appropriate account connection is used. That should not be confused with cross-buy.

- Cross-platform progression: documented explainers report that progression can carry through the linked Activision account.
- Cross-buy: a single purchase granting every PlayStation, Xbox and PC edition. This is a separate entitlement question and is not guaranteed by crossplay or cross-generation packaging.
Check the exact edition, platform storefront and included bonuses before purchasing. A cross-gen bundle can cover generations within a console family without granting a PC or rival-console license.

How to add a friend on another platform
- Confirm whether your friend is on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S or PC, and make sure you are both using Modern Warfare II.
- Sign in to, or create, the Activision account used by the game. Cross-platform social features rely on the account identity rather than only your console-friends list.
- Open the in-game Social or Friends menu and choose the option to add a friend. Select the Activision-account search field rather than a platform-only contact list.
- Enter your friend’s Activision ID exactly, including any identifying characters shown in the game, then send the request.
- Have your friend accept the request in the same Social/Friends area. Once accepted, invite them to your party and start the desired multiplayer mode.
Menu names can change after game updates. If you cannot find a friend, verify the Activision ID, check that both accounts are online, restart the social menu and confirm that neither player has disabled crossplay in the game or platform settings.

Online multiplayer still depends on each platform’s service rules. The PlayStation listing states that a PlayStation Plus subscription is required for online play. Requirements for Xbox and PC can depend on the platform and account arrangement, so check the current platform listing before buying.

Crossplay also combines controller and mouse-and-keyboard users. Players have debated controller aim assist because those input methods compete in the same cross-platform environment. If input balance matters to your group, review the game’s current input and crossplay settings and agree on the arrangement that feels fair.
