Collateral is an announced 5v5, Search and Destroy-based mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Teams take turns attacking and defending two bomb sites. Everyone starts with a pistol, earns in-match cash through eliminations and objective play, then spends it on upgrades between rounds. There are no respawns: dying costs you your loadout, but your cash carries over.
These are the publisher’s announced rules, not independently tested live-game behavior. Call of Duty Staff said more mode details would come closer to launch.
How a Collateral match works
Collateral uses two teams of five and a round-based attack-and-defense format. The teams alternate roles and contest two bomb sites. Activision describes the mode as built for players who enjoy Search and Destroy; the shared foundation is tactical play focused on objectives, with no respawns.

Cash, purchases, and what happens when you die
Every player begins with a pistol. Eliminations and playing the objective earn in-match cash, which can be spent between rounds on upgrades. The publisher says money carries over between rounds, while death removes the player’s loadout. That creates a consequential choice: spend cash on an available upgrade or retain it for a later round.
The announced purchase menu spans several categories. The publisher’s labels are reproduced below because terminology may change:

What Collateral disables
The announced rules remove several systems found in other multiplayer modes:
Rank #3
- Call of Duty: Modern Wafare II PS5
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is the sequel to 2019’s blockbuster Modern Warfare.
- Featuring the return of the iconic, team leader Captain John Price, the fearless John "Soap" MacTavish, the seasoned Sergeant Kyle "Gaz” Garrick, and the lone wolf himself, fan favorite Simon “Ghost” Riley, players will witness what makes Task Force 141 the legendary squad it is today.
- Some features may require an internet connection and an online subscription
- No respawns.
- No killstreaks.
- No automatic health regeneration.
- No custom loadouts.
Together with the loss of a loadout on death, these restrictions make each life and each between-round purchase matter. The publisher’s phrase “every dollar counts and every decision matters” is its description of the mode, not an independent assessment of balance or competitive depth.
How it differs from Search and Destroy
Search and Destroy is the closest comparison because Activision explicitly says Collateral is based on it: both are objective-focused, alternate attacking and defending, and use a one-life structure. Collateral’s announced twist is the cash system, which lets players buy from a restricted menu between rounds rather than rely on custom loadouts. Beyond those stated differences, the publisher has not provided enough detail to draw conclusions about balance, strategy, or competitive standing.

Release information and what remains unconfirmed
Activision’s September 29, 2026 announcement listed October 23, 2026 as the full-game release date and October 16 as the start of campaign early access for eligible digital preorders or prepurchases. Those are dates from that announcement, not independent confirmation of later schedule changes or regional availability.
The publisher said further Collateral details would arrive closer to launch. The available announcements do not establish purchase costs, complete round timing, how the UAV purchase works, or whether any of the listed options or rules will change.
