Short answer: a Call of Duty: Mobile blueprint is a themed variant of an existing base weapon, not a separate gun with its own progression. The underlying weapon, level progression and attachment functionality are shared. What you mainly receive is a distinctive appearance and, on Epic or Legendary versions, a preconfigured set of attachments. Once you edit those attachments in Gunsmith, the selected parts determine the weapon’s statistics and behavior, even if the blueprint’s visual treatment does not change.
The distinction matters most when you are deciding whether to keep a blueprint’s preset build, replace parts, or level the ordinary version. Multiplayer loadouts use the Gunsmith system described below. Battle Royale has a different pickup system, so its unmodified ground weapons should not be treated as evidence that blueprints are separate weapons.
What a blueprint and a base weapon are
The base weapon is the underlying gun
The base weapon is the standard weapon identity used by the game’s progression and Gunsmith systems. A blueprint keeps that identity while adding a themed model treatment, camouflage and, for some rarities, extra visual effects. It does not establish a second weapon family or an independent leveling track.

Activision’s Gunsmith explanation from August 11, 2020 describes uncommon, rare, epic and legendary variants as part of the same base weapon. That means a variant and the ordinary version are different presentations of the same firearm for progression purposes.

Which variants are called blueprints?
Activision specifically identifies Epic and Legendary variants as Blueprint weapons. They come with their own camouflage and a curated attachment package. Uncommon and Rare variants are still variants of the same base weapon, but the Blueprint label is most closely associated with the Epic and Legendary versions that have distinctive preset builds and premium visual treatments.

What changes when you use a blueprint
Appearance and visual effects
The most reliable difference is visual. A Blueprint supplies a themed camo rather than the ordinary weapon finish. Depending on the particular Epic or Legendary design, the package can include dynamic camouflage, a death effect or other presentation changes. Those effects change how the weapon looks and how eliminations are presented; they do not by themselves establish a separate damage, range or accuracy class.
Some designs alter the silhouette, color palette or animation enough that the weapon is easier to recognize in a crowded loadout screen. Recognition is still not a mechanical advantage. Treat the presentation as a way to personalize a weapon, not as a hidden weapon category.

The starting attachment setup
Epic and Legendary Blueprints arrive with a curated build already installed. Activision’s August 2020 description specifies four preconfigured attachments for an Epic Blueprint and five for a Legendary Blueprint. These are starting configurations, not limits on what the weapon can eventually use. They showcase attachments that can be obtained through the weapon’s normal leveling system.
The preset can be useful when you want to equip the weapon quickly, but it is not automatically the best setup for every mode, map or play style. A build tuned for mobility can behave very differently from one tuned for recoil control, even when both are attached to the same Blueprint. Read the attachment names and their listed effects instead of assuming that a higher rarity is a better competitive build.
Attachment visuals may not change cleanly
Blueprint parts can have their own visual variants. Replacing a muzzle, barrel, optic or another part may therefore produce an inconsistent appearance: the functional part can change while some of the original Blueprint styling remains visible. Activision warns that some Blueprints do not visibly show an attachment change.
This is a presentation issue, not proof that the replacement failed. The selected attachment is still the part the game uses for the weapon’s mechanics. When checking a change, use the Gunsmith selection and the displayed statistics as your first confirmation, then test the handling in a safe match or practice setting.
What carries over from a Blueprint to the base weapon
The weapon’s identity
Switching between a Blueprint and the ordinary version keeps you on the same underlying weapon. You are not starting a new gun family when you change the appearance or select the base model.

Level progression
Variants share progression. Activision states that the base weapon becomes the highest level reached by any owned variant, so you do not have to level each presentation separately. If you earn weapon experience while using one variant, the progress is reflected when you use another variant of that same weapon.
For example, if an Epic Blueprint takes the weapon to level 20, selecting the standard version does not return it to level one. Conversely, leveling the standard version unlocks the same weapon-level path for the Blueprint. This is why changing presentation is safe when you are optimizing a loadout: the time invested in the weapon remains attached to the shared weapon identity.
This shared level also matters for attachments. The Blueprint’s preset does not create a parallel unlock ladder; the weapon’s normal progression remains the reference point for the attachment options available to that weapon.

You can replace the Blueprint’s attached parts in Gunsmith, and the effects of the parts you choose apply to the weapon. A replacement does not become merely cosmetic because the Blueprint’s outer shell still looks the same. The same rule applies when you move from the Blueprint to the base version: the selected attachments, not the variant name, control the resulting build.

How to change Blueprint attachments in Multiplayer
The exact menu wording can vary slightly with the game client, but the Gunsmith workflow is the relevant path:
- Open Multiplayer and enter your Loadout.
- Select the primary or secondary weapon slot that contains the Blueprint.
- Open Gunsmith for that weapon. Activision Support identifies weapon, optic, attachment, perk and equipment editing as part of Multiplayer loadouts.
- Choose an attachment category and replace the preconfigured part with the part you want. The Gunsmith categories documented by Activision are optic, laser, muzzle, barrel, underbarrel, ammunition, rear grip, stock and perk.
- Keep the combination within the Gunsmith limit of up to five unique attachments equipped at one time. The nine categories are available as attachment types, but you are not required to fill all of them.
- Save or equip the loadout, then inspect the displayed weapon statistics and enter a test match or practice environment to evaluate handling.
If the model still appears to show the old Blueprint part, check the selected slot and the Gunsmith attachment list rather than relying on the preview image alone. Activision’s documented behavior is that stats and behavior reflect the chosen attachments even when the visual change is not shown.
How attachments change performance
The attachment, not the rarity name, supplies the trade-off
Gunsmith parts are functional choices. A larger magazine can increase available ammunition while reducing movement speed. A bright laser can improve hip-fire accuracy while making your position easier to reveal. Similar trade-offs apply across the other categories: a part that improves one handling characteristic can impose a cost elsewhere.

Functional and cosmetic slots are different
Activision separates the nine Gunsmith attachment categories from cosmetic customization. Optic, laser, muzzle, barrel, underbarrel, ammunition, rear grip, stock and perk can affect the weapon or its available options. Camo, charm, sticker and reticle are presented as cosmetic customization. A cosmetic change should not be read as a performance modifier unless you have also changed a functional attachment.
A fair side-by-side test
To compare a Blueprint with the base presentation, first write down every equipped functional part on the Blueprint. Select the base weapon and reproduce that exact list, including the optic and perk where applicable. Check the in-game stat panels, then fire the two configurations under the same conditions. Only after matching the attachments should you attribute a perceived difference to animation, sound or visual readability. If the results differ while the parts match, the documented explanation still gives no separate Blueprint multiplier; investigate configuration or display differences before assuming a hidden bonus.
Are Blueprints pay-to-win?
A Blueprint’s rarity and appearance are not, by themselves, a permanent performance bonus. The official explanation ties weapon behavior to the attachments selected in Gunsmith and says variants share progression with the base weapon. That makes the Blueprint primarily a presentation and convenience package rather than a separate power tier.
There can still be a practical difference when a Blueprint arrives with a useful preset. You can begin with its four- or five-attachment configuration instead of manually building a loadout, and that configuration may suit your play style. However, the meaningful performance comes from the parts installed. The same attachment trade-offs apply when you build the base weapon, and the weapon’s shared progression remains the route to its other options.
It is more accurate to describe Blueprints as themed variants with curated starting builds than as weapons with an inherent stat advantage. Visual effects can signal rarity, but the rarity label is not a substitute for checking the actual attachment list. A player evaluating value should therefore ask whether the look and included setup are desirable, not whether the label guarantees more damage or accuracy.
Multiplayer and Battle Royale are different cases
Multiplayer loadouts
The Blueprint discussion is centered on Multiplayer Gunsmith and loadouts. You select a primary or secondary weapon, configure its attachments and perks, and save that arrangement for a match. In this environment, the Blueprint and base version follow the shared-identity and shared-progression rules described above.
Battle Royale ground weapons
Activision’s September 22, 2021 Season 8 Battle Royale update changed how weapons appear as loot: players would find base weapons with no attachments and then upgrade them with attachments of varying rarity. This is a mode-specific pickup rule. It explains why a Battle Royale weapon found on the ground can begin without the preset parts associated with a Multiplayer Blueprint.

In practical terms, do not judge a Blueprint by a Battle Royale pickup. The object on the ground is governed by the loot rules for that match; a saved Multiplayer loadout is governed by Gunsmith. Attachments found in Battle Royale can also have varying rarity, which is a separate in-match equipment system from the Epic or Legendary classification of a Multiplayer Blueprint.
Common situations and the correct interpretation
“I changed the barrel, but the model still looks unchanged.”
That can be normal for a Blueprint whose visual treatment does not display every attachment swap. Verify the selected barrel in Gunsmith and check the statistics or handling in a match. The installed part can be active even when the preview retains some Blueprint styling.
“I used the Blueprint, then switched to the base weapon. Did I lose my levels?”
No. Variants share progression, and Activision says the base weapon reflects the highest level reached by any owned variant of that weapon. Switching presentations does not require a second leveling track.

Compare the attachment lists first. A preset magazine, grip, barrel or other part can change handling, movement, ammunition or accuracy. If the configurations match, the official explanation does not identify a separate Blueprint-only stat multiplier to account for a difference.
“Why did a Battle Royale pickup have no attachments?”
That follows the Season 8 Battle Royale rule described by Activision: ground weapons begin as base weapons without attachments, which you add from loot. It is not a Multiplayer Gunsmith Blueprint being stripped of its identity.
“Can I use every one of the listed categories at once?”
No. Activision documents nine attachment categories, but Gunsmith allows up to five unique attachments equipped at one time. The category list describes the available types, while the five-attachment limit controls the build you take into a Multiplayer match.
“Does an optic or reticle make the Blueprint stronger?”
An optic is a functional Gunsmith choice and can alter how you aim; a reticle is listed with cosmetic customization. Evaluate the selected optic and its trade-offs, but do not treat the reticle, charm, sticker or camo as an inherent damage or range upgrade.
A practical decision rule
- Keep the Blueprint preset when you want its appearance and the included attachment combination is appropriate for your loadout.
- Edit the Blueprint when you like the visual treatment but need different recoil, mobility, ammunition or sight characteristics.
- Use the base presentation when you prefer a standard look; the weapon level and attachment progression remain shared.
- Compare attachment lists rather than rarity labels when evaluating performance.
- Judge a Battle Royale weapon by the attachments you loot in that match, not by assumptions about a Multiplayer Blueprint.
- When troubleshooting, confirm the selected slots and statistics before judging a change by the model preview.
The useful mental model is simple: the Blueprint changes how the weapon is presented and how it is initially configured; Gunsmith choices determine how it performs; the underlying weapon progression remains common to the Blueprint and base version.
