California residents can use the state’s Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) to send one request to participating data brokers to delete personal information they hold, subject to legal exemptions. It is not a tool for erasing every trace of your data from the internet: it does not cover information you gave directly to a business, publicly available information, or information the law allows a broker to retain.
What the Delete Act and DROP do
California’s Delete Act, Senate Bill 362, directs the California Privacy Protection Agency (CalPrivacy, also known as CPPA) to provide a central way for consumers to request deletion of non-exempt personal information held by registered data brokers. A data broker is not simply any company that holds personal information. In the agency’s description, it is a business that knowingly collects and sells consumers’ personal information to third parties when it does not have a direct relationship with those consumers. DROP began accepting consumer requests in January 2026. Brokers began processing them August 1, 2026. Under the current process, brokers must access DROP at least once every 45 days to retrieve requests, process them, and report status. The platform is an ongoing mechanism rather than a one-time sweep; brokers must also maintain deletion-request lists to help keep deleted information out of their systems. How to submit a DROP request
- Open the official DROP platform. Verify California residency through the California Identity Gateway. State-contracted identity verification vendors assist with residency checks. Official DROP platform and DROP terms
- Enter identifiers you are comfortable providing. The consumer guide lists current and former names, date of birth, ZIP code, email addresses, phone numbers, mobile advertising IDs, connected-TV IDs, and vehicle identification numbers. Providing accurate identifiers can make it more likely that brokers will match your request to their records. You choose which optional information to submit. DROP consumer guide
- Review and submit your request. A request is for one person only; do not put another person’s information into yours. After submission, keep the eight-digit DROP ID private. You will need it to check request status. DROP terms
- Check status after brokers have had time to process it. The consumer guide says status updates may take as long as 90 days to appear. If your name, contact details, device, or car changes, you can update your profile and add identifiers. DROP consumer guide
How to interpret each status
A status tells you what happened with a particular broker’s response; it is not a single, universal confirmation that all your information has disappeared.
- Deleted: The broker matched you and deleted the non-exempt information it holds about you.
- Exempted: The broker has information about you but may retain it under a statutory exemption.
- Opted-out: The broker could not make an exact match. It still has the data, but may no longer sell or share it.
- Record not found: The broker either has no information about you or could not locate a record using the identifiers you provided. Adding accurate identifiers may help with matching.
- Pending: The broker has not processed the request yet.
These meanings come from the official DROP consumer guide. In particular, “Opted-out” and “Record not found” do not mean your data was deleted.

What DROP can—and cannot—remove
Information covered when a broker finds you
If a broker matches your request, it must delete the non-exempt personal information it holds about you—not just the identifiers you entered in DROP. If it cannot make an exact match, it must retain the request and take steps to keep your information out of its systems. DROP consumer guide
Information outside the described deletion requirement
- Information you gave directly to a business with which you have a first-party relationship.
- Publicly available information.
- Information a broker may retain under a statutory exemption.
These limits mean DROP is a central request mechanism for active participating data brokers, not a universal internet deletion service. It does not promise removal from every website, company, or public record. DROP consumer guide

Information you submit to make the request
Using DROP is not information-free: the platform terms say information you submit is disclosed to the data brokers receiving your request so they can process deletion and opt-out requests. For details about handling of submitted information, read the current platform terms and the privacy policy they incorporate.
Timing, enforcement, and what to expect
Because broker processing began August 1, 2026, a submitted request may remain pending while brokers retrieve and process it. Brokers must access DROP at least once every 45 days, and consumers may wait up to 90 days for statuses to appear. These are processing and reporting timelines, not a promise of immediate deletion. CalPrivacy’s broker guidance states a penalty of $200 per day per deletion request for each day a broker fails to delete information as required, plus investigation and administrative costs. That is an enforcement provision; it does not guarantee that every request will result in immediate deletion. CalPrivacy broker guidance
What to do if a result is incomplete
- If a broker reports Record not found, check that the identifiers in your profile are accurate and consider adding relevant identifiers you are comfortable sharing.
- If it reports Opted-out, understand that the broker still has the information; the status indicates it may no longer sell or share it, not that it deleted it.
- If it reports Exempted, the law allows the broker to retain the information described by that status.
- If it remains Pending, allow time for the broker’s retrieval and processing cycle before treating the request as complete.
- If your identifiers change, update the profile so future matching can use current information.
DROP’s reach is limited to the brokers participating in the state mechanism and to data within the law’s scope. The CPPA registry page displayed zero registered brokers with a July 29, 2026 update date, a figure that conflicts with other agency pages describing active brokers and with DROP’s broker process.
