An October 3, 2026 report says Los Angeles County health officials warned people to stay out of the water at several beaches after tests found bacteria levels above state health standards. The report names Santa Monica Beach, Paradise Cove, Redondo Beach, Venice Beach, Topanga County Beach and Manhattan Beach. That list is a report snapshot, not a verified live advisory: check the county’s current notice and the signs at the beach before entering the water.
Which beaches are named in the October 3 report?
The report, attributed to the New York Post through an indexed republication, names these locations:
- Santa Monica Beach
- Paradise Cove
- Redondo Beach
- Venice Beach
- Topanga County Beach
- Manhattan Beach
The available report does not establish the precise boundaries of each warning, whether every named location remained under advisory later that day, or whether additional beaches were affected. California’s State Water Resources Control Board says statewide posting and closure information is updated weekly, so use current local notices for decisions rather than relying on this list.

What does a bacteria warning mean?
A beach posting, also called a water-use warning, means local officials have reason to warn that water contact may be unsafe. The State Water Resources Control Board explains: “A posting doesn’t mean the beach is necessarily closed.” A posting concerns water use in the affected area; it does not automatically close the whole beach.
A closure is a separate restriction. It can be imposed for an emergency, including when a sewage spill reaches or may reach the ocean, and remains in effect until the responsible agency lifts it after follow-up testing.

Why can ocean water be unsafe even if it looks clean?
Potential contamination sources include sewage spills, storm-drain discharges and urban runoff. The water may not look or smell contaminated. California’s monitoring program measures indicator bacteria, including total coliform, fecal coliform and enterococcus. These measurements help assess water quality; their detection does not mean every indicator is itself a disease-causing organism.
Contact with contaminated water may cause illness. The state lists possible effects including fever, vomiting, and throat and eye infections, as well as other serious illnesses. A warning signals a risk, not a guarantee that someone will become ill.

How to check whether a beach is safe before you go in
- Check the current local notice. Look for the Los Angeles County Public Health beach advisory or closure information on the day of your visit; warnings can change after follow-up sampling.
- Check the sign at the access point. Follow any posted warning or closure and pay attention to the area covered by the notice.
- Use the state’s BeachWatch information as another reference. California says routine beach-monitoring results are uploaded to BeachWatch, but the county’s current direction should guide your immediate decision.
- Take extra care after rain. Many local agencies advise avoiding ocean water while it is raining and for up to three days afterward because of runoff. This is general precautionary guidance; follow the current local notice.
Who tests the water and issues warnings?
California’s State Water Resources Control Board sets monitoring protocols, oversees data quality and distributes program funds. Local health agencies monitor public beaches and issue postings and closures. Routine monitoring includes the bacterial indicators total coliform, fecal coliform and enterococcus, with results uploaded to BeachWatch.
On a page updated September 29, 2026, the State Water Board reported more than 600 beach monitoring sites, approximately 150 million beach visits annually and approximately 80,000 samples collected per year. These statewide figures describe the monitoring program, not the number of beaches under warning in Los Angeles County.
