For revenue, Investing.com compared reported sales of $539.61 million, rounded from the company’s $539.607 million, with its consensus estimate of $587.8 million. That is a shortfall of approximately $48.2 million against Investing.com’s figure.
Estimates vary by provider
Consensus estimates are not a single official number. MarketBeat’s earnings page displayed an estimate of a $0.77 loss per share and revenue of $561.57 million for the same quarter, rather than Investing.com’s $0.47 loss and $587.8 million in revenue. MarketBeat’s figures were displayed on its earnings page as accessed October 3, 2026. The company’s release reports actual results, not an analyst consensus; therefore, the $0.79 EPS miss specifically reflects Investing.com’s estimate comparison.
Why sales and earnings fell
Cal-Maine attributed the deterioration mainly to conventional shell eggs. The company said the market was abundantly supplied after industry layer-flock repopulation during fiscal 2026, with that added supply combining with seasonally softer first-quarter pricing to push conventional egg prices lower. Management described demand as healthy, but said the industry supply imbalance was weighing on pricing.

Conventional shell egg sales fell 59.5% year over year. Average selling price per dozen dropped 59.3%, while volume was relatively flat, according to the company’s quarterly release. That mix of nearly unchanged volume and sharply lower pricing helps explain why reported sales and profitability weakened so dramatically.

The conventional downturn coincided with a shift in Cal-Maine’s sales mix. Specialty shell eggs and prepared foods together represented 54.1% of net sales, up from 37.1% in the prior-year quarter. Prepared foods alone accounted for 11.7% of sales, compared with 7.8% a year earlier.
- Specialty shell egg sales declined 14.0% year over year.
- Prepared foods sales declined 13.0%; the company partly attributed the decrease to temporary production reductions tied to capacity expansion and network optimization.
Chief executive officer Sherman Miller said conventional shell egg pricing remained under pressure from an industry supply imbalance while underlying demand remained healthy. He also pointed to specialty eggs and prepared foods as evidence of progress in broadening the business. The shift in mix is a diversification effort, but it did not prevent a net loss in this quarter.
Capacity plan is forward-looking
Cal-Maine said prepared-food production capacity was expected to increase by more than 60% by the first half of fiscal 2028, compared with fiscal 2026 year-end. That is management’s forward-looking plan, not a guaranteed outcome.
