Cal AI is a photo-based calorie and macronutrient tracking app created by Zach Yadegari and Henry Langmack, who were 18-year-old high-school students when TechCrunch profiled them in March 2025. The app launched in May 2024. MyFitnessPal announced in March 2026 that it had acquired Cal AI and planned to keep it running as a standalone product.
What Cal AI does
Cal AI is designed to estimate calories and macronutrients from a meal photo. Its Apple App Store description says users can photograph a meal or select an existing image, then review the estimate. The app also describes manual meal logging and the option to adjust serving amounts in grams. These are the app’s stated features, not proof that its estimates are accurate.
The listing cautions: “Results are estimates and depend on the photo, portion size and recipe.” A photo may not show ingredients or preparation details, and the amount pictured can be difficult to judge. Adjusting serving grams gives users a way to change the portion recorded, but does not independently confirm the calories or macros assigned to it. The listing says Cal AI is not a medical device and does not provide medical advice.

Who built it, and what the download figures mean
TechCrunch’s March 16, 2025 profile described Yadegari and Langmack as 18-year-old high-school students and reported that they launched Cal AI in May 2024. Yadegari told the publication the app had passed five million downloads in its first eight months. TechCrunch said it could not validate that download claim.

The article also noted that Google Play showed more than one million downloads at the time. That was a historical store observation, separate from the founder’s larger claim. The Google Play listing surfaced in 2026 still displays a “1M+” download threshold and says it was updated August 14, 2026. A store threshold is not an exact cumulative count, so it does not establish how many total downloads the app has today.
How much confidence should you put in its estimates?
The available information establishes how Cal AI says its photo logging works and identifies factors that can affect results; it does not establish a quantified accuracy rate. No Cal AI-specific accuracy study is identified in the sources cited here. Store descriptions and a founder’s comments are not independent validation, so the app’s estimates should be treated as estimates rather than measurements or clinical guidance.

For a more controlled food log, weigh a portion and enter or adjust its amount in grams when the app allows it. A kitchen scale can measure serving weight, but it cannot verify the app’s calorie estimate. The trade-off is straightforward: photo logging can reduce manual effort, while measuring and entering portions requires more work but gives you a known serving weight.
MyFitnessPal acquired Cal AI
On March 2, 2026, MyFitnessPal announced that it had acquired Cal AI. The company said it planned to continue the app as a standalone product while investing in its development and marketing. The announcement establishes the acquisition and stated plan; it does not mean Cal AI’s photo estimates have been independently validated.

The Apple and Google Play listings surfaced for this article show different developer labels, and the available material does not explain the discrepancy. The acquisition announcement alone is not a basis for assuming every similarly named store listing is the acquired product.
