Cadence announced Vision Q6 on April 11, 2018, as its fifth-generation vision and AI DSP. It is licensable processor IP for chip designers—not a standalone processor board or a retail component. Cadence said Q6 delivers 1.5× the vision and AI performance of Vision P6, targeting embedded vision workloads in smartphones, surveillance cameras, automotive systems, AR/VR, drones and robotics.

What is the Cadence Vision Q6 DSP?

Vision Q6 is a digital signal processor (DSP) IP core from Cadence’s Tensilica family, designed for embedded computer vision and on-device AI. Cadence described it as its fifth-generation vision and AI DSP when it announced the processor on April 11, 2018.

In practice, a chip designer licenses and integrates processor IP into a system-on-chip (SoC). Q6 is therefore not a consumer product that an individual can buy as a finished chip or development board through ordinary retail channels.

What markets and workloads does Vision Q6 target?

Cadence identified smartphones, surveillance cameras, automotive systems, augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), drones and robotics as target markets. These products can use a DSP for camera and image-processing pipelines and for running neural-network tasks locally on the device.

STM32 Nucleo Development Board with STM32F446RE MCU NUCLEO-F446RE
  • High-performance foundation line, ARM Cortex-M4 core with DSP and FPU, 512 Kbytes Flash, 180 MHz CPU, ART Accelerator, Dual QSPI
  • On-board ST-LINK/V2-1 debugger/programmer with SWD connector
  • Can be powered from USB
  • Three LEDs, Two Push-buttons
  • Support of wide choice of Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) including IAR, ARM Keil, GCC-based IDEs

Q6 is specialized for embedded vision and AI processing rather than general-purpose CPU work. Cadence’s software description lists support for Caffe, TensorFlow, TensorFlow Lite and the Android Neural Networks API, as well as more than 1,500 optimized OpenCV and OpenVX functions. Those tools and libraries are intended to help developers build computer-vision pipelines and deploy neural-network workloads on chips that incorporate the DSP.

How much faster is Vision Q6 than Vision P6?

Cadence claimed that Q6 provides 1.5× the vision and AI performance of Vision P6. It also claimed 1.25× better power efficiency when Q6 operates at Vision P6’s peak performance. These are vendor-published comparisons from the 2018 announcement, not independent benchmark results; the announcement does not provide a workload-by-workload benchmark table in the figures cited here.

Adau1401 Dsp Learning Board Processing Development Module for Studio Sound Shaping and At-home Projects
  • Complete ADAU1401 Single-Chip Module: Built around the ADAU1401 with embedded 28 / 56-bit processing, analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion, microcontroller-style control interfaces — all on compact board for quick prototyping
  • Self-Booting from Onboard Storage: The module loads its program independently from onboard non-volatile storage at power-up and can save current parameters back to storage on shutdown, eliminating the need for an external main controller in standalone setups
  • Expandable via I2C and 4-Wire Ports: All function ports are out, including digital I2S input / output, push-button inputs, drive, auxiliary analog inputs for volume controls, and rotary — letting users extend the board as needed
  • 98.5 Dynamic Range for Clear Sound Output: Two analog input channels and four output channels deliver 98.5 of analog-to-analog dynamic range, with digital input and output ports for linking additional conversion in the chain
  • Stable Across Wide Temperature Range: for a working span from minus 40 to 105 degrees Celsius, this board suits both casual desktop use and more demanding environments where temperature stability is important
Measure Vision Q6 Vision P6 comparison
Vision and AI performance Cadence claimed 1.5× P6 performance in its April 11, 2018 announcement. Reference point for Cadence’s comparison; an absolute throughput figure is not stated in that announcement.
Power efficiency Cadence claimed 1.25× better efficiency at P6’s peak performance. Efficiency at its own peak performance is the comparison point; an absolute value is not stated.
Frequency and process Cadence’s published architecture information specifies 1.5 GHz peak and 1 GHz typical frequency at 16 nm. Not stated in the cited Cadence architecture information.
Floorplan area Cadence says Q6 achieves its stated frequency targets in the same floorplan area as P6. Same floorplan area is the stated comparison; absolute area is not stated.

What do the architecture figures mean?

Cadence’s published architecture information describes a 13-stage pipeline and a system architecture designed for large local memories. It reports a peak frequency of 1.5 GHz and a typical frequency of 1 GHz at 16 nm, while retaining the same floorplan area as Vision P6. These are Cadence specifications, not a guarantee that every customer’s implementation will reach the same operating frequency: the implemented chip, design choices and operating conditions matter.

Is Vision Q6 available to buy, and what about automotive use?

Q6 is semiconductor IP licensed to manufacturers for integration into their own chips. It is not a finished retail device, and the cited Cadence material does not establish a public licensing price, a current licensee list or retail availability. A company evaluating Q6 would need to discuss licensing and integration directly with Cadence or an authorized channel.

Automotive systems are among the target markets Cadence named. The materials described here do not establish a particular automotive safety certification or readiness level, so the market target should not be treated as proof that a Q6-based design meets a vehicle program’s safety requirements.

Where does Q6 fit in the Vision DSP generations?

Vision Q7 followed Q6 as the sixth-generation Vision DSP. In its 2019 announcement, Cadence advertised Q7 as delivering up to 2× Q6’s AI and floating-point performance in the same area. That is a later-generation vendor comparison, not an independent benchmark; it also does not change Q6’s role as a licensable IP core for embedded vision and AI products.
