The mid-market or reference rate is a benchmark, not a guaranteed rate for a bank customer or cardholder. To find what a conversion really costs, compare the final USD delivered or CAD charged for the same amount and transaction—not just the displayed exchange rate.
What does the CAD-to-USD rate mean?
Exchange rates can be written in either direction. A quote of CAD 1.4246 per USD means one US dollar costs 1.4246 Canadian dollars; it does not mean that one Canadian dollar buys USD 1.4246. The two directions are reciprocals.
The Bank of Canada’s October 2, 2026 observation was CAD 1.4246 per USD. This is a dated reference observation, not a live or guaranteed customer quote. The Bank says its rates are indicative averages based on aggregated price quotes from financial institutions, and that daily average rates are published once each business day by 16:30 ET. Mid-market rate versus a bank’s customer rate
“Mid-market rate” is commonly used for a benchmark between buy and sell quotes. A bank rate, by contrast, is the rate offered for a particular transaction, amount, channel, and time. A reference rate can help you understand the market, but it does not establish what a bank will give you.
There is no single bank markup that applies to every CAD-to-USD conversion. The rate and any separate fees depend on the provider and transaction. Check the specific quote and terms rather than assuming a standard spread or inferring the cost from the rate label alone.

How to compare the real cost
Compare like with like: the same amount, currency direction, and type of transaction. Record the quote time because rates can change, and include all fees that affect the amount received or charged.
- For a transfer or currency exchange: compare the USD you will actually receive after conversion and provider fees.
- For a USD purchase on a Canadian card: compare the final CAD charge, including the card’s conversion and any applicable conversion charge.
- For a card or ATM offer to convert into CAD: compare the merchant’s or ATM’s converted amount with the result of paying in local currency under your card’s terms.
Also account for delivery or settlement time and convenience. A lower-looking rate is not enough to identify the better option if fees, timing, or the final amount differ.

What card conversion charges add
For a foreign-currency card transaction, the issuer applies an exchange rate and may also charge a foreign-currency conversion fee. The cardholder agreement states the applicable charge, so check that agreement for your card rather than assuming all issuers use the same rate or fee. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada explains the rate-and-charge structure and provides an illustrative calculation using a 2.5% conversion charge; that figure is an example, not a universal card fee. When a merchant offers to charge you in CAD
A merchant or ATM may offer dynamic currency conversion (DCC), displaying the transaction in your home currency and applying its own conversion. Visa says this conversion may include an exchange rate and additional fees. Its guidance is to consider paying in local currency instead; its stated advice is, “To avoid the markup, decline the conversion and choose to pay in local currency.” Visa Canada: Dynamic Currency Conversion Explained

A practical comparison checklist
- Set the transaction: write down the amount, direction (CAD to USD or USD to CAD), and whether it is a cash exchange, transfer, card purchase, or ATM withdrawal.
- Get current quotes: note each provider’s rate and the time it was quoted. Treat the Bank of Canada rate as a reference, not a retail offer.
- Add separate charges: include transfer, conversion, card, or ATM fees that apply, and check your card agreement for foreign-currency terms.
- Compare the outcome: for money sent, compare USD delivered after fees; for a purchase, compare the final CAD charge.
- Weigh practical differences: consider settlement time, access, and convenience only after identifying the total cost for equivalent transactions.
Without comparable, current quotes for your amount and use case, no bank, card, or transfer method can be named as the cheapest in general.
