Before buying a smartphone on sale in the UK, check who is selling it, whether it is new or refurbished, what the warranty actually covers, and how returns work. A discount does not remove the rights that apply to sale goods, but change-of-mind returns and remedies for faults follow different rules.
Check the seller and the phone’s condition
Confirm whether you are buying from the manufacturer, a retailer or a marketplace seller. On a marketplace, identify the business named as the seller rather than assuming the platform itself is responsible for the sale.
Read the listing’s condition description carefully. “New,” “open-box” and “refurbished” are not interchangeable. For a refurbished phone, find out who refurbished it, who stands behind that work, and what the listing promises about its grade, parts and battery. The word “refurbished” alone does not establish a common inspection standard, battery condition, warranty or returns policy.
Read the warranty terms before paying
Do not rely on a warranty badge or a short summary on the product page. Check the warranty document and note:

A seller-specific refurbished example
Samsung UK’s terms for certified refurbished products bought directly from Samsung.com state a one-year limited manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship; registration may be required. The terms describe a fault process for the first 30 days after receipt and a repair offer for faults after that period but within the 12-month warranty. These terms apply to that Samsung offer, not to refurbished phones generally. Check the current terms linked to the exact product listing.

Know which return rules apply
UK government guidance says sale goods have the same refund rights as full-price goods. For online, mail or phone orders, you generally have 14 days after receiving the phone to tell the seller you want to cancel, then another 14 days to return it. See GOV.UK’s consumer refunds guidance for the applicable details.

If you buy in person, there is generally no automatic right to return a phone simply because you changed your mind, although the shop may offer its own return policy. Read the seller’s terms before purchase and distinguish that voluntary policy from rights concerning faulty or misdescribed goods.

Keep faults separate from change-of-mind returns
A phone that is faulty, not as described or unfit for purpose raises different issues from a buyer simply deciding they no longer want it. GOV.UK says a consumer may have a right to free repair or replacement regardless of whether a warranty or guarantee is still in force. A voluntary warranty does not replace statutory rights; the precise remedy depends on the circumstances and applicable law. The official refund guidance explains the UK rules.
Before ordering, check how the seller wants a fault reported and keep evidence of the purchase and the problem. Do not assume that an expired manufacturer warranty by itself ends your statutory rights.

Compare the whole offer, not just the discount
When comparing two sale listings, make sure they are for the same model, storage capacity and network configuration. Then compare the details that affect the value and risk of the purchase:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Final delivered price, not just the advertised discount.
- Whether the phone is new, open-box or refurbished, and who is responsible for its stated condition.
- Warranty provider, duration, exclusions and claim costs.
- Online cancellation terms and the process for a faulty phone.
- The identity of the seller, especially on a marketplace.
A lower price alone does not show that one offer is better. The seller, condition, warranty and return terms all matter.

The large screen is ideal for multitasking, allowing apps and media to feel spacious and engaging even in a single glance.
Decide whether optional cover is worth it
An extended warranty is a separate, optional purchase. UK government guidance says statutory rights remain, and that nobody has to buy an extended warranty. Before paying for one, check its total price and term, its exclusions, whether your bank account or contents insurance already covers the phone, and how the cost compares with replacing the device. See GOV.UK’s extended-warranty guidance.
Consumer-law details here are UK-specific. If you are buying outside the UK, check the rules and seller terms that apply where you live rather than assuming these time limits or rights apply there.
