Burns & McDonnell ranked No. 19 on Fortune’s 2026 Best Workplaces in Engineering list. Fortune produced the ranking with Great Place To Work, using employee feedback; the recognition is a workplace-list placement, not a measure of engineering performance.
What recognition did Burns & McDonnell receive?
The company announced on September 30, 2026, that it had been named to Fortune’s 2026 Best Workplaces in Engineering list. Fortune’s ranking places Burns & McDonnell at No. 19—not first overall. Burns & McDonnell’s announcement describes the recognition, while Fortune’s published ranking gives the position.
How was the ranking determined?
Fortune partnered with Great Place To Work and analyzed feedback representing more than 14,000 U.S. employees at companies eligible for the engineering list. The company’s announcement says the engineering-industry survey considered employees’ confidence in company leadership, respect, fairness in workplace decisions, and camaraderie with coworkers.

Fortune’s stated eligibility rules required Great Place To Work Certification, at least 10 U.S. employees, and an engineering-industry classification. Fortune also says companies appearing on its 100 Best Companies to Work For list rank at the top. These are the rules for this list; it is not a census of every engineering employer or a direct assessment of technical engineering quality.

The announcement separately cites Great Place To Work’s broader survey pool: more than 1.3 million confidential employee surveys representing the experiences of 7.3 million U.S. workers in 2025 and 2026. Those overall figures are distinct from the more-than-14,000 employee responses associated with companies eligible for the engineering ranking.
What the company says about its workplace
Burns & McDonnell describes itself as a 100% employee-owned engineering and construction firm founded in 1898, with more than 75 offices worldwide. The company says its integrated design-build approach brings engineering and construction professionals together across a project’s lifecycle, and that it invests in training, mentorship, continuing education, and leadership development.

Chair and CEO Leslie M. Duke said: “Engineering is fundamentally about solving complex challenges, and it requires talented people who are empowered to learn, grow and contribute,” The statement expresses the company’s perspective on its approach; it is not a separate explanation of Fortune’s ranking criteria. Company descriptions also do not establish that every employee has the same experience.
What the ranking tells job seekers—and what it does not
A No. 19 placement offers one employee-feedback-based signal about Burns & McDonnell as a workplace. The cited methodology does not establish that the company has the best technical engineering quality, guarantee an identical experience across roles or offices, or compare pay, benefits, work-life balance, or conditions on a particular team.

When comparing workplace rankings, check the publisher and year, geography, eligibility rules, employee sample, and whether the results rely on employee feedback. Rankings with different scopes should not be treated as interchangeable, and raw positions do not make a like-for-like comparison. Fortune’s published page establishes this ranking and its methodology, but does not provide a comparison with another 2026 engineering-workplace list.
