A burner email address is a substitute address used for a limited purpose, such as receiving a signup confirmation without sharing your primary email. The term can describe either an inbox that expires or a longer-lasting alias that forwards messages. Those options are not interchangeable: an expiring inbox may be unsuitable for an account you need to recover later.
What “burner email” means
“Burner email” is an informal term, not a strict technical category. It generally means an email address created or used to keep a particular interaction separate from your main address. People also call these addresses disposable or temporary, but services differ in how they work, how long messages remain available, and whether you can send mail.
A temporary inbox receives messages for a limited time or until it is discarded. A persistent alias, sometimes called a mask, forwards messages to your regular inbox while hiding that inbox’s address. Privacy International describes disposable services as either forwarding messages to a real inbox or existing only for a limited period (Privacy International).
Temporary inbox or persistent alias?
| Feature | Temporary inbox | Persistent alias |
|---|---|---|
| Typical purpose | A one-time or short-term interaction | Ongoing correspondence while concealing your primary address |
| Message access | Messages may be available only during a limited retention period; details vary by provider | Incoming messages are forwarded to a primary inbox; forwarding and retention details vary by provider |
| Future account verification or recovery | May fail if the address or inbox expires | Can continue to receive messages while the alias remains active and forwarding works |
| Sending, replies, and attachments | Not consistent across services; check the provider’s features | Not consistent across services; check the provider’s features |
| Privacy and access | Some inboxes may be accessible to others who know or guess the address | The service handles routing and may process message content or metadata; review its privacy terms |
For an account you expect to keep, a persistent alias is usually more practical because future verification and password-reset messages can still reach you. AdGuard, for example, says its temporary inbox is receive-only, can be deleted when a new address is generated, and may be removed after inactivity or extended use. Those are AdGuard-specific conditions, not a universal rule (AdGuard).

When a burner email is useful
- Receiving a one-time confirmation for a low-stakes signup.
- Trying a product or accessing gated material without giving out your primary address.
- Signing up for a newsletter you do not expect to keep receiving.
- Testing your own signup and transactional-email flows.
Use an address only in ways allowed by the service’s terms and applicable law. For example, one provider’s policy prohibits fraud, impersonation, evading restrictions, and farming free trials or promotional rewards; that is an example of provider rules, not a universal legal determination (Temp-Mail privacy policy).
When not to use one
Do not use a short-lived or publicly accessible inbox for banking, medical, financial, or other sensitive accounts. Avoid it for any account that might need a password reset or future verification: if the address disappears, messages may no longer be recoverable. Some sites also block temporary-email domains or require a verified, lasting address.

What privacy a burner email does—and does not—provide
A substitute address can reduce one direct link between a website and your primary email. It does not make you anonymous. A forwarding service must process routing information and may handle message content or metadata. Burner Mail, for example, says it processes messages during forwarding, may retain operational logs, and does not provide end-to-end encryption for ordinary internet email. These details apply to that provider; check the policy of whichever service you use (Burner Mail privacy policy).

Some temporary inboxes are not private from other people. A provider may use addresses that are not secret or reserved, allowing others who know or guess an address to read messages while they remain available. Temp-Mail’s policy describes this risk for its service (Temp-Mail privacy policy). Do not submit sensitive information unless the inbox’s access controls and handling are suitable.

How to choose the right kind
- Decide whether the account is disposable. If you may need future verification or recovery, choose an address you can keep using rather than an inbox that may expire.
- Check how messages reach you. Confirm whether the service provides a private inbox or forwards messages to your primary address, and review message-retention terms.
- Check needed features. Verify whether you can send or reply, and whether attachments are supported, if those functions matter.
- Read the privacy policy. Look for access by others, logging, message processing, and data-sharing terms.
- Confirm the site accepts the address. A website may reject disposable email domains or require verification through an address that remains available.
Associated Press coverage of email masking describes services that conceal a primary address, including options such as DuckDuckGo Email Protection, Firefox Relay, Fastmail, Addy.io, SimpleLogin, and Apple Hide My Email. Features and availability can change, so check current service details before choosing one (Associated Press).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can burner email addresses be traced?
An address may conceal your primary email from the site where you use it, but that alone does not prevent a service provider from processing routing data or keeping operational logs. What information is retained depends on the provider’s policies and systems. Treat a burner address as a way to separate email identities, not as a guarantee of anonymity.
