Bungie co-founder Jason Jones has launched Stone Kite, a Santa Monica-area world-building studio he co-founded with novelist and cross-media creator Margaret Stohl. Stone Kite’s first property is One Zero One, a science-fiction universe that begins as a four-part limited comic rather than a game.

What is Stone Kite?

Stone Kite launched on October 1, 2026. The company lists Jason Jones as co-founder and Margaret Stohl as co-founder and chief executive officer. Its official description says Jones has spent more than 25 years creating worlds that shaped modern entertainment.

Jones is best known as a Bungie co-founder associated with Halo and Destiny. Stohl is a novelist and cross-media creator whose work includes books, comics, games, film and television.

Stone Kite is Jones’s new venture after Bungie, but the studio’s launch material does not establish the exact date, terms or reason for his departure. It is therefore more accurate to describe Stone Kite as his post-Bungie venture than to infer a specific exit story.

What is One Zero One?

One Zero One is Stone Kite’s debut universe: a science-fiction story about a worldwide conflict between humanity and a rogue army of AI-driven robotic soldiers.

The first release is a comic

The story starts as a four-part limited comic series. Issue #1 is available digitally, and a print edition is available for pre-order. Later issues are planned through early 2027, although the launch coverage does not provide confirmed publication dates for each issue.

Is One Zero One a game?

Not based on the announced launch material. The confirmed debut is the comic. Stone Kite also intends to develop prose, audio and screen projects, but no game release, game announcement or completed adaptation was identified in the launch coverage.

How Stone Kite says it will build its worlds

Stone Kite says its creative process is designed for multiple media from the beginning. Rather than creating a property in one format and adapting it later, the studio plans to bring creators from different disciplines into the world-building process at the same time.

Stohl described the approach as putting “the best global creators from different disciplines into the room from day one” and building communities by listening to audiences. The company’s stated premise is that audiences no longer experience stories through one dominant medium, so the creative process should reflect that reality.

Jones said he has spent his life making games but has always wanted to write. He also credited Stohl with being the first person to believe he could write a book and help develop it into what he called “epic entertainment.”

Stone Kite compared with a conventional game-first studio

Aspect Stone Kite Typical game-first approach
First medium One Zero One begins as a comic A game is usually the initial release
Development sequence World-building is intended to involve multiple disciplines from the outset A primary game is commonly developed first, with adaptations considered later
Current deliverable Digital comic issue #1, with a print pre-order option An announced or released game
Expansion status Prose, audio and screen projects are planned Follow-on formats depend on separate announcements and production

This distinction matters because Stone Kite is presenting itself as a world-building studio, not simply a new game developer founded by a former Bungie executive. The company’s current evidence is a released comic issue and a cross-media development plan; the broader projects remain future work.

What happens next?

  • Additional formats: Prose, audio and screen projects are intended to expand the universe, but no completed adaptations or firm release schedule has been announced.
  • Possible future game: Stone Kite has not announced one in the launch material, so readers should not treat One Zero One as a revealed successor to Halo or Destiny.
