Researchers did develop a denser, stronger form of wood with improved ballistic resistance—but “bulletproof” is headline shorthand, not a verified armor rating. In a 2018 study, they chemically treated and hot-pressed wood; a contemporary account described a five-layer barrier trapping a bullet in a homemade test. That result does not establish protection against all ammunition or make the material suitable protective equipment.
What is “bulletproof” wood?
It is natural wood that researchers chemically softened and compressed into a denser structural material. The process partly removed lignin and hemicellulose, allowing the wood’s cell walls to collapse and its cellulose nanofibres to pack and align more closely. The researchers reported applying the approach to several wood species.
The work was reported by Jianwei Song and colleagues in “Processing bulk natural wood into a high-performance structural material,” published in Nature on 8 February 2018 (Nature paper).

- Partially remove components of the wood. The researchers boiled it in an aqueous mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfite, partly removing lignin and hemicellulose.
- Hot-press the treated wood. Pressing collapsed the cell walls and packed the cellulose nanofibres into a denser structure.
This is an engineered material, not ordinary lumber that has simply been dried or coated. The changes in its structure and density matter when interpreting its measured performance.

What did the study measure?
Song and colleagues reported more than tenfold increases in strength, toughness and ballistic resistance compared with natural wood in the study’s research context. These are reported material-test results, not a guarantee that a board or finished object will perform the same way in a different design or under different conditions (Nature paper abstract).

The density figures are the study’s reported comparison; the processed material was substantially denser. The paper also reports improvements in hardness, impact, bending and compression properties, but those results differ by test and loading direction. They do not support a single, unqualified claim that the material is “stronger than steel.”

Can wood stop a bullet?
Chemistry World’s 8 February 2018 report says the researchers used a homemade ballistic tester and that a five-layer barrier made from the densified wood trapped a bullet (Chemistry World report). This is evidence of a proof-of-concept experiment, not a standardized armor test.
The reported result does not establish protection for every projectile, firearm, velocity, distance, thickness or panel construction. The cited sources do not report a standardized armor certification, and they do not describe the material as certified body armor. Do not rely on it as protective equipment.

Nor does a material-strength result alone establish a safe design for a beam, wall, vehicle panel or wearable armor. Geometry, thickness, orientation and the way a component is loaded all affect performance; those applications require designs and tests specific to their intended use.
Does it resist moisture?
In one humidity test reported in the paper, an unpainted densified sample increased in thickness by 8.4% ± 0.9% after 128 hours at 95% relative humidity. A painted densified sample showed 0% thickness increase in that same test (Nature paper).

That result indicates improved dimensional stability for the painted sample under the specified protocol; it does not prove waterproofness or long-term outdoor durability.
Is it a practical replacement for lumber or armor?
The process raises density considerably, and the material’s properties depend on direction and geometry. Those trade-offs make it inappropriate to treat a laboratory result as a ready-made substitute for conventional lumber or certified armor.

As Chemistry World reported, Dan Ridley-Ellis, head of the Centre for Wood Science and Technology at Edinburgh Napier University, said: “It’s certainly not going to replace wooden joists or wall elements, because they’ve decreased the dimensions, but I can see it being used as a reinforcing element.” Polymer chemist Carmen Mihaela Popescu, of the Petru Poni Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, also said further research was needed to characterize the material (Chemistry World report).
Can you buy it?
The 2018 paper and the contemporary account establish a research material and process, not a current retail product. These sources do not establish commercial availability, licensing, or a validated building product. That does not prove no product exists anywhere; it means availability is not established by the cited sources.
