Moving beyond page-builder-led WordPress work starts with a different question: not just how to assemble a site, but what WordPress is doing underneath. In his DEV Community article, WordPress developer Sohag Hossen describes that shift—from building with page builders toward learning more about themes, plugins, APIs, performance, and the platform’s architecture.
From building pages to understanding WordPress
Hossen describes his growing interest this way: “Over time, I’ve become more interested in understanding what happens behind the WordPress dashboard rather than only building websites with page builders.” That is the central change in his account. Page builders remain part of his work, but he wants to understand the system beneath the interface and take on development that reaches beyond assembling pages.
His account is a personal description of his work and goals, not an independently verified career history or a technical evaluation. The DEV Community author profile likewise describes his focus in WordPress development.
The work he says he does today
Hossen says his work spans WordPress Core, custom themes and plugins, ACF and ACF Pro, WooCommerce, Bricks, Elementor, REST API integrations, and performance optimization. The list combines several kinds of work: tools for building pages, structured content, commerce, custom WordPress development, external integrations, and site performance.
#1 Best Overall
His stated ambition to go deeper should not be read as saying that all these areas are new to him. Rather, he presents the technical scope of his work alongside a continuing desire to understand WordPress architecture and improve his programming skills.
Why look beyond page builders?
Hossen’s motivation is to understand what happens behind the dashboard, not merely to produce a page through a visual interface. Custom themes and plugins, structured content, and API integrations are among the areas he identifies as part of his development focus. Performance is another stated area of work. Taken together, these interests point toward a broader view of a WordPress site: its content model, custom behavior, connections to other services, and how efficiently it runs.

His account does not identify a single event that caused this change, so it is best understood as an evolving professional interest rather than a sudden turning point.

WP Genesis AI: an exploration, not a proven service
Hossen says he is working on WP Genesis AI, an AI-powered WordPress project intended to help users build, manage, and improve websites using natural language. He frames the ambition as more than generating a page: “The goal isn’t simply to generate a page.” This is a description of the project’s intended direction, not evidence that it has launched, delivered those capabilities, or produced measured results.

The learning path he describes
Hossen’s stated areas for continued growth are improving his PHP and JavaScript, and going deeper into WordPress architecture, APIs, performance, and AI-assisted development. These priorities connect programming fundamentals with WordPress-specific work: understanding the platform, building integrations, and considering how sites perform.
For a developer following a similar direction, a practical way to turn those interests into experience is to build a small theme or plugin and use it to work through a real content or integration need. That is a suggested practice approach, not a claim about Hossen’s own process. His account presents the broader goal clearly: keep moving from using WordPress tools toward understanding and shaping the system behind them.
