base31 began as a curated directory of links and grew into something broader: a place to discover websites, use small browser-based tools, explore APIs and apps, and publish simple static sites. The change did not require turning the project into a sprawling platform; it came from extending the directory around the needs of people who arrive looking for something useful—or simply something interesting.
Why a directory needed to become more than a list
A list of links can answer a straightforward question: what sites belong in this collection? But people often arrive with a different need. They may want an image tool that works without an API key, or they may have no specific destination in mind and just want to find something cool. Those two modes—intentional search and open-ended exploration—shaped base31’s growth.
The project’s author describes a broader mix of curated and outside websites, public APIs, apps and AI tools, editorial picks, tool guides, and community-published sites. The live site presents its listings in six collections and supports browsing by tags. The goal was not simply to increase the number of links; it was to give visitors more useful ways to find and try things.
How the project’s structure supported that growth
In the author’s account, the main application uses Next.js and TypeScript, with curated directory entries kept in editable JSON rather than written directly into interface components. An entry can include a name, URL, category, tags, description, and an optional review date. That separation lets the same content support category browsing, detail pages, search, metadata, recommendations, and editorial picks.

The author also describes a separate Cloudflare Worker for functions including voting, basic statistics, community publishing, discussion, notification subscriptions, and shared API endpoints. This is the project’s reported architecture, not an independent technical audit.
Keeping entries as data rather than UI code has a practical advantage: adding or updating a directory item does not require treating every listing as a one-off page. As the project added new kinds of content and features, a consistent content model could continue to feed different parts of the experience.

Discovery works in more than one direction
Search when you know what you need
The author says base31 search covers names, URLs, descriptions, categories, and tags. That breadth matters because visitors do not always know a tool’s exact name. Someone looking for an image utility, for example, might search by the task or a descriptive term rather than by a brand.

Browse when you do not
For visitors without a precise search, the project includes category and tag browsing, editor’s picks, and a random-pick option. Together, these offer a route from purposeful lookup to casual discovery without requiring the visitor to know the directory in advance.

Small browser tools make the directory usable
Alongside listings, the author describes hosted browser tools such as an image compressor and resizer, QR code generator, password and passphrase generator, GitHub repository explorer, disposable email inbox, domain availability and idea finder, iframe tester, website status checker, daily word game, and screenshot or file-sharing tools. These are examples from the author’s description, not an independent assessment of each tool’s current operation.
This combination changes the role of the site. A directory points outward to useful destinations; a browser tool can solve a small task right where the visitor is browsing. Both fit the same broad purpose—helping people find or use something useful—but they create different maintenance and trust obligations.

Community publishing brings moderation with it
The project also allows visitors to submit static HTML, CSS, and JavaScript sites for hosting and public discovery. The live site’s FAQ describes this submission and hosting model, and the author explicitly notes that public uploads require moderation. Accepting community projects therefore means taking responsibility not only for a submission form, but also for reviewing what becomes publicly accessible.

Public submissions can broaden what a directory contains, but they also require a process for deciding what is acceptable and how published work is presented.

Trust and accessibility are part of the product
The author lists responsive layouts, reduced-motion support, keyboard navigation, visible focus indicators, and clear labels for sponsored or referral placements among the project’s design goals. The live site labels sponsored links. Separating those placements from editor’s picks helps visitors understand why an item is featured, rather than leaving commercial status implicit.
The base31 author describes the broader lesson this way: “Building base31 has been a good reminder that a project can grow without needing to become huge or complicated overnight.” Read the base31 author’s article.
What the live site shows now
When the official site was retrieved on October 7, 2026, it stated that base31 had been live since September 20, 2026, displayed version 1.49.0, and showed 195 picks in its directory map. These are site-maintained details that can change, not fixed measures of the project’s size or history. The live site also presents six collections and describes its community publishing model.
