An AI keyboard that works across iOS apps is a custom keyboard extension—not a replacement with unrestricted access to the system. Its design must account for user-enabled Full Access before it can use network services, sensitive keystrokes, fields and apps where custom keyboards are unavailable, and a separate process with a device-dependent memory limit. If AI help is needed only inside your own app, an app-owned input view may be a better fit.

Choose the right iOS input architecture

For a keyboard users can select in other supported apps, build a custom keyboard extension. The user must add and enable it in Settings. If the feature belongs only in your own app, consider a custom UIInputView for that app’s text field instead; that avoids building a systemwide keyboard where one is not needed. Apple outlines these approaches in its custom keyboard guide and Virtual Keyboards guidance.

Decide whether AI runs locally or on a server

Apple’s platform documentation describes access and extension constraints, but does not establish which approach produces better model quality, latency, or cost. Those depend on the model and implementation.

Approach Platform implications Key design consideration
Local inference Keystrokes need not be sent to a server, but the model and extension run within the extension’s separate, device-limited process. Apple does not specify a universal memory allowance. Test memory use on multiple devices and handle memory pressure.
Server-side inference Requires the extension to request open access and the user to enable Allow Full Access. Typed input becomes available to the keyboard developer. Explain the data flow, transmit securely, and use and retain input only as needed for the service.
App-only assistance An app-owned input view serves the app’s own text field rather than acting as a selectable systemwide keyboard. Prefer this when users do not need the keyboard in other apps.

Full Access is a user decision, not a checkbox you can bypass

By default, a custom keyboard’s sandbox blocks network access and writing to the containing app’s shared group container. To use capabilities that require open access, the extension declares RequestsOpenAccess in its extension attributes, and the user must separately enable Allow Full Access for the keyboard in Settings. Apple explains the declaration in its RequestsOpenAccess documentation and the user-facing configuration in Configuring open access for a custom keyboard.

Request this access only when the product needs a documented open-access capability, such as server communication or shared-container writes. Tell users what enabling it does and why the feature needs it. Apple states: “If you build a keyboard without open access, the system ensures that keystrokes can’t be sent back to your server or anywhere else.”

Treat every keystroke as sensitive input

When a user enables open access, Apple says keystrokes are available to the keyboard developer. A server-powered AI feature therefore creates a direct trust relationship: users need to understand when text leaves the device and what the service does with it. Apple’s guidance expects secure transmission when data is sent to a server, use only for text-input purposes, and no retention of received keystroke or voice data beyond what is needed for the explained service. These requirements do not prescribe a particular model, cloud provider, privacy policy, or retention period; those choices depend on the implementation and other applicable requirements.

Plan for places where the keyboard cannot appear

A custom keyboard is not guaranteed to be available for every text field. Secure text fields and phone-number fields use the system keyboard, and a host app can reject custom keyboards altogether. Build the experience so users can continue with the system keyboard when the extension is unavailable. See Apple’s Virtual Keyboards guidance and custom keyboard interface documentation.

Design for extension limits and familiar keyboard behavior

Budget for a separate, memory-limited process

The keyboard extension runs in its own process, with a memory limit that varies by device. Exceeding that limit terminates the extension. Test across multiple device models and handle memory pressure; dismissing the keyboard does not guarantee its process or memory is immediately released. Avoid assuming there is one safe memory budget for every iPhone or iPad.

Preserve expected keyboard interactions

Apple’s current custom keyboard guide calls out familiar behaviors such as autocorrection, autocapitalization, and smart quotes. Apple’s archived Custom Keyboard programming guide also says a keyboard must provide a next-keyboard key and describes limits on microphone use, text selection, and inline autocorrection controls beside the insertion point. Because that guide is archived, validate those specific details against the SDK and OS versions you target.
