To build a full-screen web utility that can keep the display awake, combine three separate pieces: draw the interface with HTML Canvas, request fullscreen after a user gesture, and request a screen wake lock while the page is visible. None is automatic or guaranteed: fullscreen does not keep the display awake, and a wake lock does not make a page full-screen. Give users clear controls and show the actual state of each feature.
What each browser feature does
- Canvas provides a surface for drawing graphics and custom controls. It does not control fullscreen or screen power. The WHATWG HTML Standard defines the canvas element and its drawing interfaces.
- Fullscreen expands a chosen element, such as the app container, into the browser’s fullscreen mode. It requires a user action and can be denied or exited.
- Screen Wake Lock asks the platform to prevent the screen from turning off. The W3C specification says, “Only visible documents can acquire the screen wake lock.”
These capabilities can be used independently. A utility can be in fullscreen without a wake lock, hold a wake lock without being full-screen, or have neither if a request fails or the user turns a feature off.
Plan the interface before writing the API calls
Use Canvas for what needs drawing
Canvas is a good fit for a visual display, custom graphic, or animated surface. Keep essential instructions and controls as ordinary HTML when practical. HTML text and buttons are easier to select, navigate, and expose to assistive technologies than controls drawn only as pixels. A canvas should not be the only place a user can find directions or status.

Keep fullscreen and wake-lock controls separate
Offer distinct controls for entering fullscreen and keeping the screen awake. Show separate status for each, and provide a clear way to stop the wake lock. This avoids implying that one feature activates the other or that either is guaranteed to remain active.

Make the “zero-ad” claim specific
“Zero-ad” describes a product choice, not a certification from the browser standards. The standards do not establish that a particular utility is ad-free, private, or free of network requests. Make only claims that match the implementation.
Request fullscreen from a user action
Call requestFullscreen() on the element you want expanded, typically the app container, from a clear user gesture such as a button click. The request is asynchronous, so handle both success and rejection. Listen for fullscreenchange as well: the browser or user can change the state outside the app’s own toggle logic.

const app = document.querySelector("#app");
const fullscreenButton = document.querySelector("#fullscreen-button");
fullscreenButton.addEventListener("click", async () => {
try {
if (!document.fullscreenElement) {
await app.requestFullscreen();
} else {
await document.exitFullscreen();
}
} catch {
showFullscreenStatus("Fullscreen is unavailable. You can still use the page here.");
}
});
document.addEventListener("fullscreenchange", () => {
updateFullscreenStatus(Boolean(document.fullscreenElement));
});
The example updates status through application-defined functions; it does not assume that a request will succeed. The MDN reference for requestFullscreen() documents its promise, activation requirement, and errors. The MDN Fullscreen guide explains that users can leave fullscreen, including with Esc or F11, and that switching tabs or applications can end fullscreen. Tell users how to return to the normal page. On some mobile browsers, fullscreen can affect viewport scaling and pinch-to-zoom.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRequest and manage the screen wake lock
The Wake Lock API is available only in secure contexts, and acquisition is asynchronous. Check for the API before requesting a screen lock; handle rejection and release events; and update the interface only when the lock is actually held.

let wakeLock = null;
let wantsWakeLock = false;
async function enableWakeLock() {
wantsWakeLock = true;
if (!("wakeLock" in navigator)) {

return;
}
if (document.visibilityState !== "visible") return;

showWakeLockStatus("Screen wake lock is off.");
}
document.addEventListener("visibilitychange", () => {
if (document.visibilityState === "visible" && wantsWakeLock && !wakeLock) {
enableWakeLock();
}
});
Here, wantsWakeLock represents the user’s preference to keep the screen awake during the activity. The app attempts reacquisition when the page becomes visible again, but reports the result rather than promising success. If a request fails, let the user continue with the ordinary page. The MDN Screen Wake Lock API guide describes feature detection, errors, release events, and visibility-based reacquisition.
When wake locks can stop working
- The page is no longer visible. An inactive page loses its existing wake lock. Reacquire on return only if the user has chosen to keep the feature on.
- The browser or platform denies or limits the request. Battery or power-saving conditions can affect availability. A successful request is not a guarantee that the display will remain lit in every device state.
- The user or app ends the activity. Release the lock when the user turns it off or finishes the task; do not keep it active without a current need.
- The utility runs in an embedded page. Permissions Policy can constrain access; the Screen Wake Lock specification gives the feature a default allowlist of
self.
These limits are why the interface should distinguish a requested state from an active lock and listen for release events. The W3C Screen Wake Lock specification describes visibility, policy control, and platform limits.

Choose a sensible behavior for the task
Use Canvas with ordinary HTML controls
Choose this approach when the main display needs custom drawing but users still need readable instructions, buttons, or status text. Keep the visible state and essential actions accessible outside the canvas where practical.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Make fullscreen optional
Fullscreen provides more room for an immersive utility; an in-page layout preserves browser context and makes navigation more obvious. Let users enter fullscreen deliberately, and keep the utility usable if the browser refuses the request.

Scope wake lock to the activity
A user-controlled, task-scoped wake lock offers a practical balance: enable it when the user starts a task that needs an awake display, show when it is active, and release it when the task ends. Reacquisition on returning to the page is appropriate only when the user’s preference remains enabled. For uses such as reading, map navigation, following a recipe, presenting, scanning a QR or barcode, or voice- and gesture-driven interaction, MDN lists screen wake lock as a possible fit; those examples are not a guarantee of availability on a particular device.
Test failure paths, not just the ideal state
- Try fullscreen from the intended button and verify that a rejected request leaves the page usable.
- Exit fullscreen with the browser controls and confirm that the app’s status follows
fullscreenchange. - Test with the page hidden and then visible; confirm that a held lock is treated as released and that any reacquisition follows the user’s setting.
- Test a browser without
navigator.wakeLockand a rejected request; neither should be presented as an active lock. - Turn the wake lock off and finish the activity; confirm that the app releases it and updates its status.
API availability and platform behavior vary. The cited documentation establishes general behavior, not an exhaustive current browser-and-version support matrix, so do not promise identical results everywhere.
