A practical DevOps learning path is a sequence of capabilities, not a required list of tools or a guaranteed route to a particular job. Start with software and systems fundamentals, then make delivery repeatable, learn to automate and operate infrastructure, add cloud-native skills where your goals require them, and finally build platform capabilities for other developers. At every stage, prove what you know by building, deploying, observing, and recovering a working system.

What to learn first—and what the sequence is for

DevOps brings engineering practices and collaboration together to improve how software is delivered and operated. DORA’s capability map spans technical, process, and cultural areas—including version control, test automation, continuous delivery, cloud infrastructure, observability, and security. That makes it a more useful guide than treating DevOps as a synonym for a particular pipeline or job title.

The sequence below is a practical scaffold, not a universal prerequisite order prescribed by DORA or the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). If you already work in software, systems administration, networking, or cloud operations, use your existing strengths as a starting point and spend more time on the gaps that matter to your project.

Stage 1: Build engineering and systems foundations

Before automating delivery, you need to understand what is being delivered and what it depends on. Learn enough programming or scripting to read a codebase, make a small change, and automate a repetitive task. Pair that with version control, command-line fluency, operating-system and process basics, networking concepts, data and service fundamentals, and testing.

What to learn

  • Read and change a small program; use a script to automate a simple, repeatable task.
  • Track changes with version control and explain the purpose of a commit or code review.
  • Use the command line to inspect files, processes, and basic network behavior.
  • Understand how a service uses configuration, data, and dependencies, and how a basic test can catch a regression.

Checkpoint project

Keep a small service or script in version control. Give it a README that explains its purpose, dependencies, and repeatable local setup; add basic tests and describe at least one way it could fail. This is a suggested learning artifact, not an official DORA or CNCF requirement.

Stage 2: Make software delivery repeatable

Once you can follow a change through a codebase, automate the path from change to running software. Learn code review, automated checks, continuous integration, artifact creation, deployment automation, and a controlled way to release changes. DORA’s capability topics include continuous integration, continuous delivery, test automation, trunk-based development, deployment automation, and small batches; the point is to understand the practices behind these terms rather than memorize one vendor’s pipeline syntax.

What to practice

  1. Make a small change and submit it for review.
  2. Run tests and other appropriate checks automatically when the change is proposed or committed.
  3. Build a deployable artifact consistently from the project’s source.
  4. Deploy through a documented, controlled path and check the result.
  5. Practice reverting or recovering from a bad change, then document what you did.

Checkpoint project

Your project should build and deploy consistently, run automated checks, and include a documented rollback or recovery procedure. A successful pipeline run alone is not enough: you should be able to explain what it checks, what it produces, and what happens when a step fails.

Stage 3: Automate infrastructure and learn to operate services

With a working delivery path in place, extend repeatability to the infrastructure and operational work around the application. Learn cloud infrastructure concepts and infrastructure automation alongside identity and access, secrets handling, configuration, and software supply-chain awareness. Add monitoring, logs, traces, incident response, and reliability objectives as appropriate for the service. DORA’s capability map explicitly includes cloud infrastructure, monitoring and observability, and shifting security left.

Practice operating the service

  • Identify the signals that would help you notice a failure and determine its likely cause.
  • Use a dashboard or other useful operational signals to follow the service’s behavior.
  • Walk through how you would diagnose a failure and make a safe recovery.
  • Explain the difference between collecting signals and using them to understand and debug a production system.

Checkpoint project

Operate your deployed service with useful signals, describe how you would detect and investigate a failure, and demonstrate a safe recovery. This turns infrastructure and observability from isolated topics into part of the service lifecycle.

Stage 4: Add cloud-native and Kubernetes skills when they fit your goal

If your target work involves cloud-native infrastructure, learn containers and Kubernetes concepts after you understand application delivery and basic operations. Build toward the APIs and deployment patterns, networking and storage, security, and troubleshooting needed to deploy and operate a service in that environment. Do not mistake the ability to apply a configuration for the ability to diagnose a system.

CNCF’s open curriculum repository spans topics including Kubernetes, GitOps, security, observability, and platform engineering. Use it to choose a suitable depth or to see what a related credential covers. Treat a syllabus as a study map, then demonstrate competence with a working system and troubleshooting—not tool exposure alone.

Stage 5: Learn platform engineering by serving developer needs

Platform engineering means building reusable, secure, observable capabilities that help application teams deliver software. It is not simply installing a portal or centralizing infrastructure. A useful platform makes a supported path easier for developers to use while giving them clear interfaces and operational feedback.

CNCF’s Certified Cloud Native Platform Engineer (CNPE) domains provide a concrete outline: platform engineering fundamentals; observability, security, and conformance; continuous delivery; platform APIs and infrastructure provisioning; internal developer platforms and developer experience; and measurement. CNCF’s launch article also discusses Kubernetes automation, self-service, operator patterns, Backstage, developer portals, service catalogs, and DORA metrics. These are examples of ideas and components—not a requirement to use any one tool.

Capstone project

Expose one safe, repeatable route for a developer to create or deploy a service. Document its API or template, include relevant policy checks and operational signals, and provide a way to collect feedback from the people using it. This is a suggested project design based on published CNCF domains, not a formal certification checklist or a claim that every organization needs the same internal developer platform.

How to choose a curriculum, course, or certification

Choose a learning resource based on the gap you need to close and the evidence it asks you to produce. A broad capability map can help reveal missing areas; a vendor curriculum can teach a particular provider’s workflow; a platform-engineering syllabus can organize study around that specialty. For any of them, check scope, level, hands-on work, portability, currentness, and cost.

Option Best use What it covers or assesses Limits to keep in mind
DORA capability map Finding gaps across software delivery and operations Technical, process, and cultural capability areas A capability map, not a fixed course sequence or a certification exam
CNCF open curriculum Structuring study across cloud-native topics Curricula spanning Kubernetes, GitOps, security, observability, and platform engineering Choose a depth suited to your work; studying a syllabus does not itself demonstrate operating skill
CNCF CNPA A foundational, vendor-neutral platform-engineering knowledge checkpoint Online proctored multiple-choice exam across six platform domains Knowledge assessment; it is not the same as a practical performance-based exam
CNCF CNPE Experienced practitioners seeking an advanced practical assessment 120-minute online proctored performance-based exam, with terminal and web-based tasks Advanced and hands-on; it need not be a prerequisite for starting platform work
Google Cloud Partners DevOps Engineer, SRE path Learning Google Cloud-specific workflows A listed path of 14 activities, described as on-demand courses, labs, and skill badges for Google Cloud technologies Provider-specific; verify the current activity list and availability

CNCF describes CNPA as foundational and CNPE as advanced; neither credential has to precede work in the field. The CNPA page lists its price as $250 with one free retake, and the CNPE page lists $445 with one free retake; those are prices shown on CNCF’s certification pages when accessed in 2026 and may change. CNCF describes CNPA as vendor-neutral, while the Google Cloud Partners path is explicitly about Google Cloud technologies. Google’s path page was last updated 10 months before it was accessed, so check its current contents before committing.

Decide whether a credential is worth it

  • Choose a credential when its syllabus gives structure to a real gap or its assessment gives you a useful way to check your knowledge.
  • Prefer resources that make you build, deploy, debug, or operate something if your goal is practical capability. Google describes its path as including courses, labs, and skill badges; CNPE includes performance-based tasks.
  • Separate transferable concepts from provider-specific implementation details, and check whether a course supports the versions and tools relevant to your goal.
  • Compare fees with open curricula and free reading before paying. Google’s SRE resource page provides online reading access to SRE books.

Build evidence of capability, not just a list of tools

A portfolio can show progression without claiming to be an official exam checklist. Make the evidence inspectable: document how a project is set up, how a change is checked and deployed, what signals help you understand its behavior, and how you recover from a failure. At the platform stage, add the developer-facing interface and a way to learn whether it is useful.

For reliability and operations, Site Reliability Engineering: How Google Runs Production Systems is an optional reference. Google Books lists the second edition, published by O’Reilly on September 30, 2026, at 750 pages, ISBN 9798341607682. Google’s SRE Books page also offers online reading access, so buying the book is not a prerequisite for this learning path.

Adapt the path to your starting point

Use the checkpoints to decide what to study next, rather than assigning yourself a fixed number of weeks or trying to master every tool before moving on. If you can already write and test software, begin with the delivery checkpoint. If your background is infrastructure or operations, build enough programming and application-delivery fluency to follow a change end to end. If your goal is platform engineering, learn the earlier capabilities well enough to understand what application teams need from a platform, then deepen your work on APIs, self-service, security, observability, and developer experience.

There is no single required sequence or credential in the published frameworks described here. The practical test is whether you can make a change repeatable, deliver it, understand its behavior, recover safely, and—when working on platforms—make a supported path easier for other developers to use.
