A desktop pet can chat through a local language model, but the model is not a game sensor. Keep conversation separate from observations: show game context only when your app has collected a specific signal, identify where it came from and when it was checked, and say “unknown” when there is no reliable answer.
How the pieces fit together
Think of the pet as three components: a user interface, a state layer that records observations, and a local inference service that generates replies. The interface can send a prompt to the model over HTTP, while the state layer decides what verified context—if any—to include. This separation prevents fluent but unsupported model output from being mistaken for telemetry.
- Collect observations. Store each game-related signal with its source, value, and observation time. Do not treat an absent signal as proof that a game is not running.
- Apply freshness rules. Decide how long each signal remains usable. After that interval, mark it stale rather than presenting it as current.
- Build the model request. Include only observations that passed your checks, label them as observations, and tell the model not to infer missing game details.
- Render the reply with context. Keep observed state visually distinct from generated conversation so users can tell which is which.
Connect the pet to a local model
Ollama on Windows
Ollama’s Windows documentation describes a native Windows application and a local API at http://localhost:11434. Its generate endpoint is /api/generate; the documented PowerShell example posts a model name, prompt, and stream setting. That gives a Windows pet a straightforward local HTTP integration point. See Ollama’s generate API documentation for the request format and options.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →In practice, your app should handle the service being unavailable, the requested model not being installed, and a response taking longer than expected. Those are application-level failure cases: the API example documents how to make a request, not how your pet should recover. Show a useful status and let the user retry rather than leaving a speech bubble hanging indefinitely.

OpenAI-compatible backends
A public Windows project, desktop-pet, illustrates another configuration: a draggable, always-on-top overlay with typed conversation in speech bubbles and an OpenAI-compatible HTTP backend, using Ollama by default. Its configurable backend URLs demonstrate how a client can be pointed at a different endpoint. This is one project’s implementation, not independent testing or a pattern guaranteed to work on every operating system.
Why a local model cannot establish what is happening in a game
A language model produces text from its prompt and learned patterns; a plausible answer is not evidence that the app observed a game. If the pet has not collected a signal about the active game, it should not invent a title, quest, match result, or player action. Give the model verified observations only, and have it say it cannot tell when the information is missing.

Steamworks does not make a desktop pet a universal observer. Valve describes Steamworks as a game-facing SDK and says integration is not required to ship a game on Steam. It also documents that a game must initialize the API before using its interfaces. The GameOverlayActivated_t callback in Valve’s example tells an integrated game when the Steam Overlay becomes active or inactive; that is evidence about overlay activation, not a feed of gameplay or a general signal that an unrelated desktop pet can use to query every running game. See Valve’s Steamworks API Overview and Steamworks API Reference.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe practical consequence is a narrow truth boundary: a signal proves only what its source actually reports. The Steamworks material cited here does not describe a general third-party API that reports all active games or in-game events to an unrelated pet. If you later add process detection, launcher integrations, screenshots, or an in-game mod, validate that mechanism for each platform and describe its limitations; those routes are not established by the Steamworks evidence above.

Represent game state without overstating it
Use explicit states instead of collapsing every missing result into “not playing.” A useful design model is:
| State | What the pet may say |
|---|---|
| Observed running | Name the game only if the signal identifies it, and show the source and time checked. |
| Not observed | Say that the configured source did not report a game. Do not claim that no game is running. |
| Stale | Show the last observation and its age, or omit it from the model prompt if it exceeds your freshness rule. |
| Unknown | Say the app cannot tell; do not ask the model to fill the gap with a guess. |
This state model is an implementation recommendation, not a requirement imposed by Steamworks. The key is to attach the observation source and time to displayed game context, and to make the distinction between “not observed” and “not running” visible to both the user and the model.

Choose local hardware for the model, not for a universal minimum
There is no single hardware requirement established for every local model setup. Memory needs depend on the model and its configuration, including quantization, and performance also depends on the runtime and machine. Ollama documents the local endpoint, but the cited material does not provide comparative speed or quality benchmarks for different models.
The desktop-pet project recommends a quantized 7B model and estimates roughly 5 GB of VRAM for that setup. Treat that as the project’s estimate, not a tested buying recommendation or a universal minimum. Before choosing hardware, check the specific model’s requirements and compatibility with your runtime; do not infer a required GPU model from that estimate.

Keep the conversation personable and the facts accountable
- Label generated dialogue as conversation and observed game context as app-reported state.
- Include a source and observation time with every game claim, and define when that observation becomes stale.
- Tell the model explicitly not to infer missing telemetry; handle unknown state in your app instead of asking the model to guess.
- Test failure paths: no local service, missing model, timeout, and absent or expired game observations should each produce an understandable response.
