To build Bitcoin Core from source on Linux, follow the Unix build notes for the exact source revision you checked out, install the required system packages, configure with CMake, then build. When a step fails, first identify whether the problem is a missing package, an outdated toolchain, an optional feature dependency, a CMake configuration issue, or memory pressure; those causes need different fixes.
How do I build Bitcoin Core from source on Linux?
Start with the Bitcoin Core Unix build notes for your checkout. The upstream page follows the moving master branch, so release or older checkouts may require different instructions. Avoid combining current CMake steps with older Autoconf-era guides.
For a basic system-dependency build, the current notes show this sequence:
cmake -B buildconfigures the source tree into thebuilddirectory.cmake --build buildcompiles the configured targets.cmake --install buildinstalls the result and is optional.
To inspect available CMake configuration options, run cmake -B build -LH. Consult the build notes for the revision you are compiling before adding or changing options.

Install the base packages for your distribution
These are the current upstream examples for a system-dependency build; package names and availability can vary by distribution release:
| Linux distribution | Example base packages |
|---|---|
| Debian or Ubuntu | build-essential cmake python3 libboost-dev |
| Fedora | gcc-c++ cmake make python3 boost-devel |
| Alpine | build-base cmake linux-headers python3 boost-dev |
| Arch | gcc make cmake python boost |
These package lists do not include every optional feature dependency. Add packages for the features you intend to build, or configure those features off where supported. On older Debian and Ubuntu releases, the project notes that a later compiler may be necessary.
Why does CMake say a dependency is missing?
First decide whether the missing dependency belongs to a feature you need. Wallet support, the graphical interface, IPC, ZMQ, and tracing do not all use the same dependencies. The official build notes list feature-specific requirements and CMake options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

| Feature or component | Dependency or configuration detail |
|---|---|
| Wallet | SQLite is associated with wallet support. For a walletless build, upstream documents -DENABLE_WALLET=OFF, which removes the SQLite dependency. |
| GUI | GUI builds call for Qt and libqrencode, with -DBUILD_GUI=ON. -DWITH_QRencode=OFF disables QR encoding support while compiling the GUI; it does not disable the GUI itself. |
| IPC | Cap’n Proto is associated with IPC. |
| ZMQ | libzmq is associated with ZMQ support. |
| USDT tracing | SystemTap development files are associated with USDT support. |
If the feature is unnecessary, disabling it can be simpler than installing its dependency. If it is required, install the package appropriate to your distribution and rerun CMake so the configuration step can find it. Use the option names and dependency guidance for your exact revision.
Are my compiler, CMake, or Boost versions too old?
A build can fail before project code is meaningfully compiled if the toolchain is below the project’s requirements. The current Bitcoin Core dependencies page lists minimum versions of GCC 12.1, Clang 17.0, CMake 3.22, Boost 1.74.0, and runtime glibc 2.31. These are thresholds in moving upstream documentation, not guarantees that every combination of distribution packages will work; check the requirements for your checkout.
Check the versions actually selected by your shell and build environment, rather than assuming the installed package is the one CMake will use. Compare the outputs of gcc --version, clang --version, and cmake --version with the project requirements, and check your distribution’s Boost and glibc packages as well. If a threshold is not met, upgrade the relevant tool or use a supported environment before interpreting compiler diagnostics as a source-code defect.

Should I use distribution packages or the depends system?
Bitcoin Core supports two dependency routes. System packages fit a Linux environment you already manage; the repository’s depends system builds dependencies into controlled sysroots and caches them. Neither route guarantees a successful host build, and the best fit depends on whether you prioritize using distribution libraries or controlling dependency versions within the project’s build setup.
| Route | What it offers | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Distribution packages | Uses libraries and tools installed through the Linux distribution. | Package versions and names depend on the distribution and release; older releases may not meet current requirements. |
Repository depends |
Builds dependencies in controlled sysroots and caches them. The project says fetched sources are checked against checksums. | CMake does not use the output automatically. You must pass the generated toolchain file when configuring. |
For the depends route, use the path generated for your target. The project’s depends README gives this example:
cmake -B build --toolchain depends/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/toolchain.cmake
Then build with cmake --build build. If you configure without the toolchain file, CMake may select host dependencies instead of the ones produced by depends.

Why does my Bitcoin Core build run out of memory?
C++ compilation can consume substantial memory. Bitcoin Core’s Unix build notes say: “C++ compilers are memory-hungry.” They recommend at least 1.5 GB of memory available while compiling; this is project guidance, not a universal minimum specification for every machine or build configuration.
If compilation runs out of memory, the same notes suggest several mitigations. Treat them as options to try, not guaranteed cures:
- Use the documented GCC garbage-collector tuning.
- Reduce debug information from the default
RelWithDebInfoflags. - Try Clang, which the project describes as often less resource hungry.
Use the exact flags and tuning instructions in the build notes for your revision. Also check how much memory is available during the build: other processes can reduce the memory left for compiler jobs.

How can I tell a build failure from a runtime problem?
A CMake configuration error or compiler failure happens before you have a working program. Keep the configure and build output and inspect the first meaningful error and its surrounding messages; a later cascade of errors may only be a consequence of the first failure. The project’s developer notes describe runtime logging, including debug.log in the data directory, startup flags such as -debug and -loglevel, and the logging RPC. Those tools help diagnose behavior after the software runs, not a failed compile.
Does compiling Bitcoin Core require space for the whole blockchain?
No. Compilation and running a node are separate resource questions. Bitcoin Core documentation says a default full-history node needs several hundred gigabytes or more for transaction history, and synchronization can take hours to days or longer depending on the machine and network. That storage and sync context applies to running a node; it is not a measurement of the disk space required merely to compile the source. See the project’s full node documentation for node operation details.
