Yes—you can build Android apps on an ARM64 Android phone using Termux and ADT, but this is a command-line workflow, not Android Studio running natively on the phone. TERNUX adds a Debian desktop/workspace through Termux and PRoot; ADT supplies an ARM64 Android development toolchain. The projects share a foundation, but their combined workflow remains experimental, so validate it on your device before relying on it.

What TERNUX and ADT each do

Think of the setup as two cooperating layers, not one integrated application.

TERNUX provides the Linux workspace

TERNUX uses Termux and PRoot to provide a Debian userspace and an Xfce4 desktop on an ARM64 Android phone. Termux:X11 supplies the display path. Android’s existing kernel remains in use: this is not a conventional virtual machine or a second kernel, and it does not require root. TERNUX’s desktop and graphics features are optional if you only want a command-line build environment.

ADT provides Android build tools

ADT is a separate ARM64 Android command-line toolchain. Its documented tools include native ARM64 build-tools and platform-tools such as aapt2, aidl, zipalign, adb, and fastboot, as well as JVM-executed tools including apksigner, d8, R8, and sdkmanager. ADT also documents JDK, CMake, Ninja, NDK shims, and Flutter/Dart support. Its central workflow is CLI-based; using a desktop GUI is optional.

What to check before installing

Confirm the device and available storage against TERNUX’s published requirements. These are TERNUX project requirements, not universal requirements for Android development.

  • Architecture: ARM64/aarch64 Android device.
  • Android version: Android 10 or newer.
  • Memory: TERNUX lists 4 GB RAM as a minimum and recommends 6–8 GB for its desktop plus development or small local models.
  • Storage: TERNUX estimates about 3–4 GB for its base installation. Its full --all profile uses roughly 10–12 GB, plus working space.
  • Network: Stable access is needed during installation. ADT says some artifacts are available offline, including build-tools and platform-tools 35.0.2 and build-tools 36.0.0; command-line tools and Android platforms require a network connection.
  • Graphics, if using the desktop: The documented Adreno Zink/Turnip route depends on access to /dev/kgsl-3d0. Without that access, the graphics path may differ or fall back.

For Android Studio specifically, the Android Studio installation documentation says, “Linux machines with ARM-based CPUs aren’t currently supported.” That limitation concerns official Android Studio support on Linux ARM; it does not rule out Android app development on ARM64 through ADT’s separate CLI route.

Install the two layers and validate them

Follow each project’s current installation instructions rather than assuming one installer configures both. TERNUX documents an automatic installer and a manual Termux/PRoot Debian route. Its repository notes that the one-line installer fetches the current remote script; if you want to inspect what will run first, clone the repository and review its scripts. Termux’s documentation is available at Termux Docs.

  1. Install TERNUX’s Termux/PRoot Debian environment. Choose the automatic or manual route described in the TERNUX repository. Check the repository’s current instructions for dependencies, flags, and package changes.
  2. Set up ADT inside the appropriate environment. ADT documents a guided setup with ./setup.sh. Its unattended bootstrap command is ./setup.sh bootstrap --auto.
  3. Install ADT’s documented validated profile. Run ./setup.sh install-profile validated. The profile is documented as build-tools 35.0.2, NDK 27.2, and android-36.
  4. Run ADT’s health check. Use ./setup.sh doctor to check architecture, paths, JDK availability, and tool integrity. Address any reported issue before attempting a project build.
  5. If using TERNUX’s desktop, check its graphics path. Confirm that the renderer and intended GPU route work on the actual device; do not assume the documented Adreno route is available on every phone.
  6. Test the complete app workflow on the target device. Build a small application, sign it, install it, and inspect it on the phone you intend to use. This checks more than whether the toolchain starts: it exercises the relevant build and device connection steps.

ADT marks some additional artifacts verified, including build-tools 36.0.0 and 37.0.0. That does not establish that every combination of tools and platform packages has been tested. The validated profile is the clearest documented starting point. Building other build-tools versions from AOSP source is described by ADT as a multi-gigabyte, time-consuming operation.

How strong is the compatibility evidence?

ADT reports a full physical-device pipeline on one device family: a Redmi Turbo 4 Pro running Termux with PRoot Debian. Its documentation warns that a setup expected to work on another host is not thereby verified and advises running the doctor check. TERNUX separately validated its desktop/GPU stack, while ADT says its pipeline was verified on the shared host. The projects do not claim formal end-to-end testing of the combined TERNUX-plus-ADT workflow; ADT documentation states, “Combined cross-project workflows are observed to coexist but are not yet tested formally — they remain experimental.”

ADT also reports a Flutter/Gradle build on its test device as “BUILD SUCCESSFUL in 1m 21s,” with 60 actionable tasks, dated 2026-09-01. That is one project-reported result under its test conditions, not a general estimate of phone build times or performance.
