You can build an Italian copy-review workflow with Sanity Context, but Context is the retrieval layer—not a ready-made reviewer. Your application must run the agent, apply your Italian editorial rules, and show the source passage behind each suggested change. Sanity describes Context as read-only: “It does not run the agent loop itself, and it cannot write back to your dataset.”
What Sanity Context does—and what your application must do
Sanity Context is a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that gives agents scoped, read-only access to Sanity content. For a copy reviewer, that content can include an Italian style guide and other editorial references. Sanity documents uses such as grounding agents in curated knowledge and helping editors find relevant content, but it does not claim to provide a complete Italian copy-review product or a citation interface.
You need an MCP-capable application or model harness to run the agent. Your implementation must also define the review behavior: which Italian conventions to check, how to explain a proposed edit, how to handle conflicting rules, and how to present evidence. Context provides access to material; it does not make those editorial decisions for you.
Choose how the reviewer retrieves the guide
Sanity offers two retrieval paths. Choose according to how your editorial material is stored and how current or cross-referenced the reviewer’s answers need to be. The official documentation describes GROQ as suited to structured, consistent content, and Knowledge Base mode as suited to material spread across prose and multiple sources. See Sanity Context and Knowledge Bases.

| Mode | How it retrieves content | Best fit for a style guide | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| GROQ | Queries the live Sanity dataset at request time. | A guide stored as structured, consistent Sanity content, particularly when the reviewer should reflect current dataset content. | Requires content and a deployed schema; the schema needs to expose the material the reviewer should retrieve. |
| Knowledge Base | Serves material indexed ahead of time. | Prose-heavy guidance or editorial rules distributed across several source documents. | Uses indexed material rather than a live dataset query at request time; configure the Knowledge Base and its instructions to reflect how sources should be handled. |
These are different retrieval models, not interchangeable labels for the same setup. If your guide is one structured Sanity resource, GROQ may be a natural fit. If the reviewer must reconcile prose from several references, consider a Knowledge Base. The decision depends on the actual shape of your content and freshness needs.
Design citations as part of the review experience
A reviewer that cites its guide requires application-level work. Sanity says Knowledge Base entries are Markdown documents written from their sources with citations back to those sources; Context instructions can shape those entries and guide conflict handling. Those capabilities can support grounded recommendations, but the product documentation does not promise that every proposed edit will automatically arrive with a citation displayed in a reviewer interface.
- Scope retrieval. Configure the Context endpoint to expose only the style guide and editorial sources needed for the task.
- Set review instructions. Tell the agent to explain each proposed change by naming the applicable rule and to distinguish a sourced rule from a suggestion that lacks supporting guidance.
- Preserve source references. Have the application retain the retrieved source reference alongside each recommendation rather than discarding it after generating text.
- Display the evidence. Show the relevant rule or passage next to the suggested edit so an editor can assess whether it applies.
For example, a useful review record can pair the original phrase and proposed revision with the guide passage and its source reference. The exact data format and interface are implementation choices; the important point is that the application must preserve and render the evidence rather than relying on an unsupported claim that the model followed the guide.
Set up access and prerequisites
Requirements vary by retrieval mode. For GROQ, Sanity lists a project with content and a deployed schema; server-side schema support requires Sanity Studio 5.1.0 or later. Knowledge Base mode requires at least one Knowledge Base the token can read. Sanity’s quick start recommends enabling Context for the organization, providing an organization API token with Context Viewer permissions, and using an MCP-capable model harness. Follow the Context quick start and consult the Context MCP reference for configuration details.
Access is governed by the organization token, the sources attached to the MCP configuration, and a GROQ filter where applicable. Sanity’s security documentation says a project token is refused even if it has broad project permissions; Context Viewer is the least-privilege role listed as working. Keep the token on the server side. Context is read-only in both modes, so it cannot itself save edits to the dataset. See Content access and security.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test whether recommendations are genuinely traceable
Before relying on the reviewer, check the application’s behavior with examples that exercise your editorial rules. These are implementation checks, not claims about a tested Sanity reviewer.
Rank #4
- Can an editor trace each recommendation to the specific rule or passage that supports it?
- Does the agent mark suggestions as unsupported when the retrieved material does not establish a rule?
- Does the displayed evidence make it possible to judge whether a rule applies to the sentence in question?
- When sources conflict, does the configured instruction explain how the reviewer should resolve or flag the conflict?
Keep Italian grammar policy, tone rules, and the evaluation set explicit in your own requirements: Context supplies retrieval capabilities, not a preconfigured Italian editorial standard. If you later want edits written back into Sanity, that needs a separately designed write path; Context itself cannot perform it.
