To build a product catalog in YunCMS, create a products collection in Studio, define its fields, and grant the Public role read access only to approved fields and active records. The REST endpoint is /items/products. In Yunsoft’s tutorial, this setup returns active products to anonymous callers while keeping draft records, SKU, stock, and write operations unavailable. Those outcomes were reported for one local test installation, so verify permissions on the exact YunCMS release you deploy.
What you’ll build
The pattern separates catalog management from public delivery: a team edits product records in Studio, while an application reads the collection through REST. Public access is controlled by both readable fields and a row rule—not by the collection’s visibility in Studio navigation.

- Open Data Model and create a collection with display name
Productsand keyproducts. - Keep content navigation enabled if your team needs to manage records there, and retain the recommended system timestamps and user-accountability fields.
- Treat
productsas an integration contract once an application depends on it: the key, rather than the display label, identifies the collection in the API URL.
Define fields for the catalog
The tutorial’s example uses these required fields:

The example uses active and draft as status values. A short-text field does not enforce that closed set: add validation in the application or permission setup if other values must be rejected. If the catalog supports more than one currency, model currency explicitly rather than assuming every price uses the same one.
Add records and distinguish drafts
For demonstration, the tutorial adds Canvas Backpack and Ceramic Mug as active records and Desk Lamp as a draft. These are sample records, not real catalog recommendations. Studio displays all three to the administrator, along with management fields; public visibility is determined separately by the Public role.

Restrict anonymous access with Public permissions
- Open the Public role’s permissions for the
productscollection and enable read access. - Allow only
id,name,price, andstatusas readable fields. Leavesku,stock, and system fields excluded. - Add a row rule requiring
statusto equalactive. - Leave Public create, update, and delete permissions disabled.
These controls do different jobs: the field allowlist limits what a caller can read from an allowed record, while the row rule limits which records are readable. Collection navigation visibility alone does not grant API access.

With the collection key set to products, the example endpoint is /items/products. The tutorial requests selected fields, sorts by name, and limits the page to 20 records. A server-side JavaScript example follows:

const products = await response.json();Replace the host with your YunCMS deployment address. Yunsoft reports an HTTP 403 before Public read permission is granted and HTTP 200 after the rule is saved. The successful example contains the two active sample products; the draft, SKU, and stock are absent. Prices are returned as JSON strings in the reported response, so frontend code should parse or format them deliberately for display rather than assume a numeric JSON value.
Understand filters and permission boundaries
A caller can add a filter, but the filter does not replace the Public role’s row rule. In the tutorial’s example, a price filter for values at least 500 returns the active Canvas Backpack while still excluding the draft Desk Lamp, even though the draft meets that price condition. The caller’s query narrows permitted data; it does not expand the role’s permitted record scope.

Connect a frontend and test its access
The tutorial’s frontend example uses server-side JavaScript. A browser calling a different origin may also require separate CORS or routing configuration; a same-origin reverse proxy is another option. Test the deployed release with anonymous requests and, where relevant, representative authenticated accounts.

FORBIDDEN. - Try a query intended to return drafts and confirm they remain excluded; the tutorial reports an empty list for its draft-record check.
- Check any additional roles, relationships, or write rules used by your own application instead of assuming the anonymous test covers them.
Because YunCMS is described by the tutorial as pre-stable 0.1.x, rerun these checks against the exact release and permission configuration you plan to deploy.
