You can build a basic UHF/VHF TV antenna from four metal coat hangers, a board, two lengths of wire, and a 300-to-75-ohm balun. The documented design below is a practical starting point, not a guarantee of reception or a universal set of optimum dimensions: local signal bands, terrain, buildings, and antenna placement all affect results.
Check local stations and signal conditions first
Before building, find out which stations are available at your address and which RF bands they use. The antenna needs to suit the signals in your area; station availability and reception can vary with terrain, trees, nearby buildings, and the construction of your home. Use a current, location-specific reception lookup rather than relying on older channel-number ranges in general guidance. The FCC also cautions that predicted coverage does not guarantee service at a particular home: 47 CFR § 73.618.
The coat-hanger design here follows a construction plan published by WCNY. Its measurements describe that particular project; they should not be treated as a formula for every location or a promise of a specific number of channels.

Gather the materials
WCNY’s plan calls for:
- Four metal coat hangers
- Ten wood screws and ten washers
- One UHF/VHF matching transformer, also called a balun
- Two 22-inch lengths of 18-gauge wire
- A wood board
- Cardboard or similarly sturdy material for a reflector backing
- Aluminum foil
- A drill and bits, plus wire cutters
The design also needs insulating material between the two wires where they cross, and a spacer to keep the reflector from touching the antenna assembly. Follow the illustration and placement details in WCNY’s plan.

- INDOOR TV ANTENNA FOR FREE LOCAL CHANNELS — Watch over-the-air broadcasts without cable fees; access ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS and more in 1080p HD where available
- 1080P HD WITH 4K/8K READY COMPATIBILITY — Supports high-definition viewing and works with modern TVs for clear picture and sound from local broadcasts
- RABBIT EARS WITH VHF/UHF RECEPTION — Adjustable dipoles and UHF loop help capture a wide range of signals for improved channel reception
- EASY SETUP, NO TOOLS REQUIRED — Place on a table or shelf, connect the included coax cable and scan for channels in minutes
- NEXTGEN TV (ATSC 3.0) COMPATIBLE — Ready for the latest broadcast standard for enhanced picture, sound and signal performance where available
Build the coat-hanger antenna
- Mark the board. Begin the first pair of mounting points 3 inches below the top of the board. Space the two points in each pair about 1.5 inches apart, then mark three more pairs at 7-inch intervals, for four pairs total.
- Fasten the hardware. Install the ten screws and washers at the marked positions. Mount the balun at the center of the board as shown in the WCNY plan.
- Prepare and mount the hangers. Cut each of the four coat hangers 7 inches in from each end. Attach them to the board so the opposing element ends are about 3 inches apart.
- Route the feed wires. Run the two 22-inch lengths of 18-gauge wire across the elements as shown in the plan. At the crossing, keep the wires electrically separate by putting insulating material between them.
- Add the reflector. Cover the cardboard backing with aluminum foil and place it behind the board. Use a spacer so the reflector does not touch the antenna assembly.
These are the dimensions of one published project, not established universal optimums. The source does not establish a gain figure, range, or channel-count guarantee for the build.
Connect it to the TV and scan for channels
- Connect the antenna’s feed to the balun, then connect the balun to the television’s antenna input.
- Set the television’s input mode to antenna or air, rather than cable, and start a channel scan. The exact menu name varies by TV.
- If expected stations are missing, move or aim the antenna and scan again. The FCC notes that digital reception can sometimes improve after moving an antenna by only a few inches: FCC consumer guidance.
Do not assume one scan tests every useful position. Try practical locations and orientations, keeping track of which stations appear after each scan.

Choose a placement that fits your home
Outdoor antennas generally receive better than indoor antennas, according to FCC guidance, but the result depends on height, aiming, obstacles, and the signal conditions at the site. If you can, test likely positions before permanently routing cable. An indoor location may be simpler to install, while an outdoor location may improve reception but adds mounting, weather exposure, and safety considerations. See the FCC antenna guidance.

- Full HD Local Channels: Access over-the-air networks in your area, including local news, weather forecasts, sitcoms, kids, sports, and educational programs. Easily enjoy crystal clear digital & HD shows from major networks like ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and more without any monthly subscription fees.
- Optimized Signal Reception: Equipped with advanced reception technology supporting 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 4K | ATSC formats. Vansky HDTV antenna captures stable digital signals within a reliable range, delivering high-definition visuals tailored to your local broadcast environment.
- Flexible Indoor Setup: Features a generous 16.5ft high-quality coaxial cable, allowing you to position the indoor antenna in the best signal spot—such as on a window or wall. Note: Obstacles like thick walls or valleys can affect actual reception; positioning closer to a window is highly recommended.
- Detachable Signal Amplifier: Includes an external signal booster to maximize reception for homes located further from broadcast towers. Pro Tip: If a stable signal cannot be locked with the amplifier on, simply remove the external booster and scan for channels again to find the optimal configuration.
- Safe & Durable Indoor Design: Specifically engineered for safe indoor utilization. Built with premium, flame-retardant materials to ensure long-term stability and durability, shielding your home entertainment setup against indoor environmental fluctuations.
Signal can be lost when a single antenna feed is split among televisions. Channel Master gives typical manufacturer-published loss figures of approximately 3.5–4 dB at each output for a two-way passive splitter and 7–8 dB at each output for a four-way splitter; these are not universal test results. Details are on its manufacturer page.

Keep the antenna and tools clear of power lines and other hazards. For an outdoor installation, the National Weather Service advises proper grounding to reduce lightning damage risk: lightning safety guidance.
