To make a basic TNT cannon in Minecraft, build a short water-filled channel, place several TNT blocks as the propellant charge, and set a separate TNT block at the muzzle as the projectile. Ignite the charge first, then ignite the projectile shortly afterward so the blast can launch it. Treat this as a starter design: Java and Bedrock can differ, so build and tune it in a creative test world for your edition.
How a TNT cannon works
A TNT cannon uses one group of TNT as a propellant charge and a separate TNT block as its projectile. When the charge explodes, it pushes the projectile down the channel and out of the muzzle. Water in the channel helps protect the blocks around the cannon from explosion damage while still allowing the blast to propel entities.
The sequence matters: the charge must detonate before the projectile. If the projectile explodes too soon, it will not be launched as intended. The beginner layout described in a 2013 Minecraft Forum tutorial gives only qualitative advice to ignite the projectile shortly after the main charge; it does not establish a reliable current tick delay.

What you need
- Building blocks for two parallel side rows and end supports
- Water for the channel
- Redstone dust and a button for manual ignition
- Four TNT blocks for the propellant charge
- One separate TNT block for the projectile
The four-charge, one-projectile arrangement and seven-block channel are a conceptual starting layout from that older tutorial, not a guaranteed recipe for every current version. Keep the frame simple so you can adjust it safely in a test world.

Build and fire the starter cannon
- Make the frame. Build two parallel rows of blocks with a straight channel between them. The older tutorial describes a seven-block channel; use that as a starting point rather than a version-independent specification.
- Add water. Place a water source in the channel so water runs along it. Ensure the channel is not blocked at the muzzle, where the projectile will leave.
- Set up the ignition circuit. Run redstone dust from a button to the TNT charge area. Arrange the circuit so the charge can be ignited without placing the projectile in the same ignition step.
- Load the propellant. Place four TNT blocks together in the charge position behind the projectile location.
- Place the projectile. Put one distinct TNT block at the muzzle end of the channel, positioned so the blast can push it forward.
- Test the firing order. Press the button to ignite the charge, then ignite the projectile shortly afterward. Observe whether it travels down the channel; adjust the circuit or placement in small increments if it detonates too early or is not launched.
This layout is adapted from a user-authored 2013 tutorial and has not been established as a current-version build for either Java or Bedrock. MakeCode also has a code-based TNT cannon example that illustrates components such as stone, a slab, TNT, redstone wire, a four-setting repeater, a lever, and water. It is another construction example, not an edition-by-edition performance test.
Why edition and version matter
Java and Bedrock can differ in explosion and redstone behavior. That means timing, range, and whether a particular arrangement works may not transfer between editions. A Bedrock-focused guide discusses these differences, but it does not establish universal settings: Sportskeeda’s Bedrock TNT cannon guide.

A manual cannon is the simpler place to start because you place the charge and projectile yourself. Dispenser-fed cannons add automation, but require a more involved redstone design. The Minecraft Wiki’s TNT cannon overview distinguishes manual and automatic designs and notes dispensers as a way to provide TNT; it does not supply a verified current, complete build recipe here.

| Design choice | What it involves | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Manual loading | Place the propellant and projectile by hand; trigger the redstone circuit. | The most straightforward option for learning the firing sequence. Range and repeat-fire rate are not established by the available build sources. |
| Dispenser-fed loading | Use dispensers to supply TNT as part of a more advanced mechanism. | Useful as an automation direction, but a complete current recipe and comparable performance measurements are not established. |
Troubleshoot the first test
- The projectile explodes without moving: It may be igniting before the propellant has pushed it. Adjust the sequence so the charge goes first.
- The cannon frame is damaged: Check that water fills the channel and that the charge is positioned within the intended water-protected area.
- The cannon does not fire as expected: Check the redstone path and test the circuit in creative mode. Small placement or timing differences can matter, especially across editions.
- You want greater range or faster repeat fire: Treat those as separate tuning goals. The cited beginner sources do not establish a guaranteed range, ideal charge, or repeat-fire rate.
