You can build an invoice-to-JSON API with a Next.js App Router route handler, DEVUP AI, and Zod—but treat the model’s output as a draft interpretation, not verified bookkeeping. Validate the upload, ask a supported model for a narrow set of fields, parse and validate its response locally, run only checks your invoice rules justify, and send uncertain records to a person.
What the API should return
Keep extraction separate from verification. The model proposes values read from the document; your application checks whether those values have the expected shape and whether specified arithmetic rules reconcile. A passing check does not establish that the fields were read correctly, that the invoice is authentic, or that it is payable.
Use explicit statuses, such as needs_review and auto_checked. Define auto_checked narrowly: it means the named structural and arithmetic checks passed, not that the document was independently verified. Include the checks that ran and their results so the client can explain the status.
Choose fields and assumptions before prompting
Start with only the data your application needs. A practical invoice schema might include seller name, invoice number, issue date, due date, currency, line items, subtotal, tax, and total. Tailor it to your document types and downstream rules; these are design choices, not fields DEVUP AI requires.

Do not force the model to invent values when text is absent or unreadable. Represent uncertainty explicitly—for example, with nullable fields or a separate list of fields requiring review—and make that representation part of the schema and prompt. Decide how dates, currencies, discounts, tax, and rounding work before writing reconciliation checks. For money, prefer a decimal-safe representation or integer minor units with an explicit currency, rather than relying on binary floating-point arithmetic.
Install the packages and configure the provider
DEVUP AI’s Vercel AI SDK integration documents use with Next.js and Node.js. Its prerequisites list Node.js 22.0.0 or later, and its installation example is:

Package versions, model availability, and SDK APIs can change. Confirm the provider’s current instructions and the selected model’s capabilities before relying on a specific structured-output mode.
Validate the request before calling the model
Make the route a trust boundary. Accept only the upload formats your application supports, enforce a size limit, and reject malformed requests before spending a model call. Do not assume that a filename or browser-provided content type proves the uploaded bytes are a valid image. Apply the validation and storage controls appropriate to your application.
For example, a route can accept a multipart form field named file, inspect the request and file, then convert accepted image bytes to the input format expected by the SDK and provider. The exact image-input API depends on the current SDK and model; use the integration documentation rather than assuming every model accepts the same representation.

Invoices may contain personal and commercial information. Set and communicate retention, logging, access-control, and deletion practices based on the provider terms and your own implementation. Do not promise a retention policy or privacy property unless you have verified it.
Use structured output as a constraint, not a guarantee
DEVUP AI distinguishes JSON mode from JSON Schema mode. JSON mode requests a JSON object but does not define your application’s required shape. JSON Schema mode asks for output constrained toward a supplied schema, when the selected model supports it. Capability and strictness vary by model, and neither mode replaces local validation. DEVUP’s structured-output documentation says applications should validate model output even when using json_schema. See DEVUP AI Structured Outputs.

Keep the model-side schema and prompt clear and manageable. A complex schema or conflicting prompt can contribute to a mismatch. Treat the Zod schema in your application as the final gate, even when the model receives an equivalent schema.

Build the route as a sequence of explicit gates
- Validate the HTTP request. Check the expected content type, required file, allowed image type, and size limit. Return a client error for invalid input; do not call the model.
- Prepare the image and prompt. Send the image using the input format supported by the selected model. Ask for only the declared fields, tell the model not to infer unreadable values, and require uncertainty to be represented in the agreed format.
- Request structured output when supported. Use the provider integration and selected model’s documented configuration. Do not assume schema mode is available for every model.
- Inspect the generation result. Handle provider errors, refusals, missing content, and completion metadata. In particular, check for a length-related finish reason before treating text as a complete document.
- Parse and validate locally. Parse the returned text as JSON, then pass the result through your Zod schema. Reject malformed JSON and schema failures; do not fill missing values with guesses.
- Run deterministic checks. Apply only rules whose assumptions are defined, such as line-item arithmetic or subtotal plus tax and adjustments reconciling to a total.
- Assign a status and preserve a review path. Return extracted data, check outcomes, and either a review state or a narrowly defined passing state. Keep the source image or a safe reference available to the reviewer according to your privacy policy.
Keep error handling separate from extracted data. A transport failure is not an empty invoice, and a parse failure is not a valid record that happens to have missing fields.

Set needs_review when required information is missing or unclear, local validation fails, arithmetic checks disagree, or a document falls outside the assumptions your checks cover. Show the extracted fields next to the source document so a reviewer can compare and correct them.

Set auto_checked only when the checks you explicitly name have passed. For example, report whether required fields were present and whether the defined total reconciliation passed. Do not label this state “verified,” “authentic,” or “approved” unless a separate process actually establishes those facts.

Handle common model and API failures
- Structured output is unsupported: DEVUP’s error reference documents
response_format_not_supportedwhen the selected model cannot provide JSON mode or JSON Schema. Choose a supported model or use an alternative request design, then retain local Zod validation. - Output does not match the schema: The reference documents
structured_output_mismatchwhen strict output still fails the schema after a retry. Simplify the schema or prompt, or select a supported model; do not convert a mismatch into fabricated fields. - Output is truncated: Check completion metadata, including a length-related
finish_reason. Do not parse partial text as a complete invoice. A bounded retry with a higher output limit or simpler schema may help; record the retry and stop if it fails again. - Request is malformed: Reject invalid JSON, missing inputs, and unsupported parameters before generation where possible. DEVUP’s API Error Reference describes malformed requests and unsupported parameters among 400-class errors.
- The provider call fails: Return a clear, safe error or route the item to review according to your workflow. Never silently turn an API failure into a blank invoice or a passing status.

Evaluate before automating downstream actions
Do not publish an extraction accuracy percentage without a labeled evaluation set. To measure performance for your own documents, assemble representative invoices and receipts, record correct field values, and compare model output field by field. Include unreadable images, varied layouts, and the currencies and tax conventions your application intends to support. Until that evaluation and any required verification exist, use extraction as a review aid—not as authority to pay, approve, or book an invoice.
