You can build a simple text assistant in Termux by running a Python loop that sends each prompt to a hosted AI API and prints the reply. Termux runs the program on your Android phone, but the model runs remotely, so this approach requires internet access and an API key. API access may incur charges; check your provider’s current account terms, model availability, and pricing before you begin.
What this Termux assistant does
The first version is intentionally small: it waits for a line of text, sends that text to an AI service, displays the answer, and repeats until you enter a quit command. This guide uses OpenAI’s official Python library as the example. The same overall design applies to other hosted providers, but their SDKs, credentials, model names, and request formats differ.
Termux is an Android terminal application and Linux environment. The Termux project README describes full app and package support for Android 7 and later, and warns that Android may terminate processes, including on Android 12 and later in some circumstances. Check the project’s current installation and support guidance before relying on a particular device or release: Termux app README.

Install Termux from one distribution source
Install Termux from a supported distribution source linked by the Termux project, and use that same source for any Termux add-ons. The project explains that the app and plugins share an Android identity and must have APKs signed with the same key to work together; mixing sources can therefore cause installation or interoperability problems.

Install Python and the OpenAI library
Open Termux and use its package manager to update package metadata and install Python. Package-management commands and package details can change, so follow the current Termux package-management guide rather than assuming desktop Linux instructions apply unchanged. Termux’s Python package metadata lists pip-related packages among its recommendations: Python package metadata.

Set an API key without putting it in your script
Create an API key with the provider you choose, then make it available to the program through an environment variable or another local secret store. The OpenAI SDK looks for OPENAI_API_KEY by default. Never put a real key in source code, a public repository, a screenshot, or a tutorial example. An environment variable entered in a shell session may need to be set again after opening a new session; choose a secure persistence method if you need it to survive restarts, and do not save it in shared or world-readable storage.
Create the Python assistant
Save the following as assistant.py. Replace YOUR_CURRENT_MODEL_ID with a model identifier that is currently available to your account, as listed in your provider’s model documentation. The model catalogue and account access can change; no specific model name is guaranteed here.

The example catches request exceptions so a failed call does not terminate the loop. An error message may indicate a missing or invalid key, connectivity trouble, rate limits, account or model access, or another API problem; use the provider’s response details and current documentation to diagnose it.
Run it and troubleshoot common failures

In the directory where you saved the file, make sure your Python environment has the OpenAI package installed according to the library’s current installation instructions.

Set
OPENAI_API_KEYin the current Termux shell using your chosen secure method. Do not paste the actual key into the Python file. -
Start the program with
python assistant.py. Enter a prompt, then enter/quitto exit.
- Missing-key message: confirm that the environment variable is present in the shell from which you launched Python, and that its value is valid.
- Network or connection error: check internet access. The hosted model cannot answer through this program while the phone is offline.
- Authentication, permission, or model error: check the key, account access, and current model identifier in the provider’s documentation.
- Rate-limit or other API error: inspect the returned error and consult the provider’s current guidance. The program does not retry automatically.
- Termux closes or the process stops: Android can terminate background processes under some conditions. Keep the session active while using the assistant and consult the Termux README for current device and Android-version caveats.
Choose the right scope for your project
Hosted API or local model
This example uses a hosted API: the phone runs the client, while a remote service performs model inference. That requires connectivity and credentials. A local model can reduce reliance on a hosted API, but introduces device storage, memory, performance, and setup constraints. The Termux and SDK documentation cited here does not establish which local models will work well on a particular phone, so choose a local option only after checking its device requirements.
Official SDK or direct HTTP
The official SDK provides a documented client and response object, which keeps this starter program short. A direct HTTP implementation is another possible design, but it requires constructing requests, handling authentication, and parsing responses; this guide does not provide an unverified HTTP example.
Text-only or Android features
For a terminal chatbot, Termux:API is unnecessary. If you later want scripts to use Android functions, Termux:API provides a bridge through a companion app and helper package. Install the compatible add-on and package from the same distribution source as Termux, then consult its current command list: Termux:API README.
