Build a five-pixel Knight Rider-style scanner with an Arduino UNO and PL9823 addressable RGB LEDs. The original project by Giovanni Gentile, published on Hackster.io on February 17, 2017, is framed as a beginner build and estimates about 1.5 hours. Before wiring or copying its sketch, check the LED package pinout and correct the sketch’s pixel-index boundaries.
What you need
The original project uses five LEDs. Gather these parts before starting:
- Arduino UNO ×1
- PL9823 RGB LEDs ×5
- Breadboard ×1
- Jumper wires
For a more permanent version, the project lists perfboard, a soldering iron, and an optional snappable protoboard. Start on a breadboard so you can verify the wiring and animation before soldering.

Confirm the package pinout
PL9823 packages do not all place their pins in the same physical order. The Hackster tutorial specifically warns that F-5 and F-8 versions differ in ground-pin position. Identify the exact variant and confirm its pinout before connecting power: reversing VCC and GND can destroy an LED. ELTY describes its PL9823-5 component as having VDD, GND, DIN, and DO pins, with a stated supply range of 4.5–6 V; use the requirements for the component you actually have, not a pin arrangement inferred from another package. See the ELTY PL9823-5 listing.

Chain data from one pixel to the next
Connect the Arduino signal wire from digital pin 6 to DIN on the first LED. Connect that LED’s DO to DIN on the second LED, then continue from each LED’s DO to the next LED’s DIN. Connect power with the polarity confirmed from the package documentation. The Arduino pin and the LED power connections serve different purposes: the pin-6 wire carries the control signal, while the LEDs also need correctly polarized power.
Install the library and set the LED protocol
The source project uses the Adafruit NeoPixel library. Install it through the Arduino IDE’s Library Manager, then include <Adafruit_NeoPixel.h> in the sketch. Adafruit’s Arduino Library Use guide explains library installation and use.

- 20pcs PL9823 F8 8mm LED Round RGB LED PL9823 chipset inside Full color LED Programmable RGB Lamp
- Power supply: DC4.5V - 6V
- Integrate RGB LEDs with Control IC at same body
- Support 256 dimming level for each color
- Intemal frequency up to 800K Hz
The original example defines digital pin 6, five pixels, and a nominal delay value of 100 ms, then initializes the strip with NEO_RGB + NEO_KHZ400. Those settings are specific to the published PL9823 example, not universal settings for addressable RGB LEDs. The tutorial contrasts them with its stated WS2812B setup, NEO_GBR at 800 kHz. Confirm the protocol timing and color-channel order for the exact LEDs before substituting another family or expanding the chain. ELTY lists RGB order for its PL9823-5 component; channel order determines which color appears when the sketch requests red, green, or blue.
Correct the pixel-index boundaries before using the sketch
Do not copy the published animation sketch unchanged. Code inspection shows that its return-sweep loop can reach x == NUM_PIXELS, while accessing old_val[x-1] and calling setPixelColor(x+1, ...). At the other boundary, the code can also address an invalid pixel index. These are indexing issues in the published code, not results of a hardware test.
Rank #3
For a strip with NUM_PIXELS LEDs, valid pixel indices run from 0 through NUM_PIXELS - 1. Revise both loop bounds and any array or pixel references so every access stays within those limits; then have a knowledgeable reviewer validate the corrected sketch. This article does not provide a replacement sketch because the source’s boundary logic needs correction and no corrected version has been hardware-tested here.
What the animation does
The example cycles a scanner effect through orange-red, purple, blue, red, green, yellow, cyan, and white sweeps, followed by a color-wheel animation. Its nominal delay is 100 ms, and the code includes a configurable fading trail. Treat these as settings and sequences in the source code, not measured performance guarantees. After correcting the index handling, adjust the delay and trail behavior to suit the effect you want.

- SUPER BRIGHT HIGN DENSITY LED STRIP LIGHT: High brightness SMD2835 Top LED, 1200 LEDs, Cool White 6500K, 20-22LM/LED, totally about 26000 LM, 2 times brightness than SMD 3528 LED strip light, ideal for indoor and outdoor use
- PERFECT FOR DIY: This super bright even 2835 led strip light is non-waterproof, good for home indoor use only. Flexible operations. Slim, compact and flexible PCB strip. Mount end-to-end for bendable or angled patterns, or in continuous rows
- CUTTABLE AND LINKABLE: Easy to cut and link by joint connector and not need to be soldered. It can be cut every 3 LEDs along the cutting marks, without damaging the rest strips
- EASY INSTALLATION: Self-adhesive back with adhesive tape for safe and easy application. A power supply is required but NOT INCLUDED, please search it on our store if you need one
- FEATURED APPLICATION ON HOME LIGHTING IMPROVEMENT: Prefect for home and business lighting decoration. Suitable for decoration in your dining room, kitchen bedroom, bathroom and vehicle car. Great for holidays and events all your round
Test first, then make the build permanent
- With power disconnected, verify each LED’s VDD, GND, DIN, and DO against the exact package pinout.
- Check the data chain: Arduino pin 6 to the first LED’s DIN, then each DO to the following LED’s DIN.
- Load the library and use the PL9823-specific protocol and color-order settings only if they match the LEDs in hand.
- Review the corrected loops and array accesses so no index falls outside
0toNUM_PIXELS - 1. - Power the breadboard build and check that the animation behaves as intended before transferring connections to perfboard.
For more than the five-pixel example, confirm the particular LEDs’ electrical requirements and protocol compatibility rather than assuming the original settings apply unchanged.
