You can make a mini inflatable tube man—also called an air dancer—by salvaging working parts from discarded hair dryers and turning the repairs into part of the project. The build is less about a published set of dimensions or a guaranteed airflow recipe than learning to recover a brushed DC motor, understand its fan and airflow, and solve practical problems with plastics, hardware, and worn enclosure threads.
What the project makes—and what it teaches
Hackaday’s Christian Trapp described Dina Amin’s project on October 11, 2017: a miniature air dancer made with discarded hair dryers and common workshop materials. The project video runs about five minutes, according to the article. Trapp calls an air dancer the familiar attention-getting inflatable figure associated with used-car dealerships, and attributes its invention to 1996; that date is Hackaday’s background claim, not an independently established history here.
The appeal is the sequence of repairs and experiments behind a simple effect. Amin’s project moves through painting plastic, fixing hardware, diagnosing and repairing brushed DC motors, understanding how hair dryers work, and restoring worn enclosure threads. In Trapp’s words, “While the build as such is rather basic — these things are really simple devices after all — [dina Amin]’s project video takes us through the interesting detours that turn a build into a project.” Read the Hackaday feature.

Can you build one from an old hair dryer?
That is the core idea of Amin’s project: reuse discarded hair dryers as blower sources instead of beginning with a purpose-built commercial blower. A hair dryer contains a fan and a motor, but a salvaged unit is not automatically a safe or suitable power source. The article does not publish a complete bill of materials, wiring diagram, dimensions, airflow measurements, or a controlled performance test, so it cannot serve as a step-by-step specification for reproducing a particular result.
#1 Best Overall
For a practical build, treat each hair dryer as a repair candidate, not a known-good component. Inspect it and determine whether its motor and fan are intact, how the motor is powered, and whether the existing housing can direct air into the fabric tube. Do not assume a motor’s voltage, current, or wiring arrangement from its appearance. Hair dryers may involve mains-powered circuitry and heating elements; do not energize exposed or damaged components, and do not improvise a connection without identifying the electrical requirements and providing appropriate insulation and protection.
The repair sequence that makes the build interesting
- Recover and inspect a blower source. Start with a discarded hair dryer and assess its housing, fan, motor, wiring, and fasteners. A damaged appliance is not necessarily a safe one to power.
- Diagnose the brushed DC motor. The project includes motor troubleshooting and repair. Establish what is faulty before replacing or rewiring parts; the Hackaday account does not specify a universal fault diagnosis or a particular repair procedure.
- Understand the airflow path. The motor drives a fan, and the fan must move enough air through the enclosure and tube to create the waving effect. No measured airflow or tested fan-to-tube dimensions are reported, so those must be determined for the specific parts rather than copied as fixed values.
- Make the enclosure serviceable. The project’s repairs include hardware and worn enclosure threads. A sound attachment matters because the fan assembly must remain secured while operating; the source does not identify a single thread-repair method.
- Prepare the plastic surfaces. Painting plastic is one of the project’s detours. Choose surface preparation and paint compatible with the particular plastic; the source does not name a product or provide a tested coating specification.
What the source does—and does not—establish
The documented project supports the idea of an upcycling and repair exercise using discarded hair dryers. It does not provide enough quantified information to promise a particular size, cost, runtime, airflow, or reliability. Those outcomes depend on the salvaged motor and fan, enclosure, tube, power arrangement, and quality of repairs.

Likewise, the source does not give an electrical schematic or establish that every hair-dryer motor is a 12 V motor. If you instead choose a parts-oriented build around a 12 V brushed DC motor and a 12 V DC supply, confirm that the motor, fan, supply, wiring, and enclosure are compatible as a system. A matching voltage label alone does not establish sufficient current capacity or appropriate airflow.

DIY build or ready-made mini air dancer?
A ready-made mini inflatable tube man is the direct choice if the desired result matters more than the repair project. The DIY route is better suited to someone who wants to reuse scrap and learn from diagnosing a blower assembly. The documented source provides no measured reliability or cost comparison, so the choice is about priorities rather than a proven performance advantage.
