To experience a data lakehouse on a laptop, run a small Docker-based stack in which MinIO stores data, Apache Iceberg organizes it as tables, Nessie tracks catalog state, and Dremio provides SQL queries. The components have different jobs; together, they show how a lakehouse can combine object storage with table metadata and familiar analytics workflows.

What makes this an open lakehouse?

A lakehouse is not a single product. It is an arrangement of layers: data lives in object storage, a table format describes how that data is organized, a catalog keeps track of tables and their current state, and a query engine lets users work with the data.

  • MinIO: S3-compatible object storage for the local exercise.
  • Apache Iceberg: an open table format that organizes data files and table metadata.
  • Nessie: the catalog in this tutorial, tracking table references and versions.
  • Dremio: the SQL query engine and lakehouse platform used to connect to the data and query it.
  • Docker: runs the services together on the laptop. The workshop environment also includes a notebook server as an optional interaction point.

In practical terms, files and Iceberg metadata are stored in MinIO; Nessie tracks which tables are available and their catalog state; Dremio connects to the catalog and storage to run SQL. The Dremio workshop describes reading and writing Iceberg tables on object storage cataloged by Nessie, creating semantic-layer views, and querying them. Its March 18, 2024 workshop frames the exercise as a way to “experience Data Lakehouse architecture.” Dremio’s laptop workshop

What you can learn by running it locally

The value of this setup is seeing the boundaries between storage, table format, catalog, and query engine. You can follow how an Iceberg table is stored as objects, how a catalog makes it discoverable, and how Dremio exposes it for SQL work. The notebook server provides another way to interact with the environment, but it is not essential to understanding those layers.

This is a learning environment, not a benchmark or a production deployment recipe. Dremio’s workshop calls for Docker and provides a compose-based environment with Dremio, MinIO, Nessie, and a notebook server. It does not establish minimum RAM, CPU, or disk requirements, so check the current requirements for your operating system and the specific container images you choose before starting. How the tutorial connects MinIO and Nessie to Dremio

An older Dremio tutorial supplies concrete values for its Docker network. Treat them as an example tied to that tutorial, not as universal endpoints or current compatibility guidance. Within its network, the service name minio resolves to MinIO and nessie to Nessie; those names are not addresses to copy into a separate deployment.

  1. Start with the tutorial’s Docker Compose environment and create a MinIO bucket named warehouse.
  2. Open Dremio at http://localhost:9047 and add a Nessie source using http://nessie:19120/api/v2 as the Nessie endpoint.
  3. For the tutorial’s storage settings, use the bucket’s root path /warehouse, the example endpoint minio:9000, and the S3A properties fs.s3a.path.style.access=true, fs.s3a.endpoint=minio:9000, and dremio.s3.compat=true.
  4. The example uses access-key and secret-key credentials and disables encrypted connection for its local HTTP setup. Those are sample settings for a disposable local demonstration only; do not reuse tutorial credentials or unencrypted HTTP settings for a shared or production environment.
  5. Use Dremio to work with Iceberg tables cataloged by Nessie, then query the tables with SQL. The workshop also describes creating views in Dremio’s semantic layer.

The tutorial says tables in its Nessie-backed setup can also be accessible to tools that support Nessie catalogs, naming Apache Flink, Apache Spark, Presto, and Trino. That is an interoperability claim about the tutorial’s architecture, not a guarantee that every version or configuration of those tools will work together. Dremio’s MinIO tutorial

Keep the catalog, storage, and table format distinct

These terms describe different parts of the system. MinIO is storage; Iceberg is a table format; Nessie is a catalog. A catalog is not the bucket holding the data, and choosing a table format does not itself provide a query engine.

Dremio’s current documentation lists catalog integrations separately from object-storage sources. Catalog options listed include Open Catalog, AWS Glue, Google Cloud Lakehouse Catalog, Iceberg REST Catalog, Snowflake Open Catalog, Unity Catalog, Hive, Nessie, and Microsoft OneLake. Its object-storage section lists Amazon S3, Azure Storage, Google Cloud Storage, HDFS, and NAS. The exact combination available depends on the Dremio version and deployment context; check the documentation for the release you intend to use rather than treating the list as a compatibility matrix. Dremio’s current architecture documentation describes its platform in terms of coordinators and query engines, with client access through its console and interfaces such as Arrow Flight, JDBC, ODBC, and REST. It also describes an integrated Iceberg catalog and an Open Catalog built on Apache Polaris, with interoperability for Iceberg-compatible engines such as Spark and Flink. These current product descriptions are distinct from the older laptop tutorial’s Nessie-based arrangement; they do not make that tutorial the only or current recommended architecture. When to use local MinIO, another catalog, or direct file queries

Local MinIO versus cloud object storage

MinIO is convenient for a laptop exercise because the storage service can run alongside the other components in Docker. Dremio’s object-storage documentation also describes connections to Amazon S3 and Azure Storage. A local exercise makes the architecture easier to explore; a cloud or organizational storage service brings different operational ownership and configuration requirements. Do not assume that a connection or feature documented for one deployment context transfers unchanged to another. Dremio object-storage documentation

Nessie versus other catalog choices

Nessie is the catalog selected by the tutorial, making it useful for following that example’s flow. Dremio documents other catalog options, including its Polaris-powered Open Catalog and Iceberg REST Catalog support. Select based on the engines and workflows that must share catalog state, the deployment you are operating, and version-specific support—not on an assumption that one catalog is universally best. Files versus Iceberg tables

Dremio’s object-storage documentation describes querying Iceberg, Delta Lake, delimited files, JSON, Parquet, and Excel. A file format such as Parquet describes how data is encoded; Iceberg is a table format that manages a table’s relationship to data files and metadata. Dremio’s loading guide recommends storing data in Iceberg tables for performance and scalability. That guide is for Dremio Cloud: it says Cloud creates Iceberg v2 tables by default and can upgrade when a v3 feature is used, and gives a 500 MB local-upload limit for CSV, JSON, or Parquet. Those Cloud-specific details should not be treated as limits or defaults for the local Docker setup. Dremio object-storage documentation Dremio Cloud data-loading guide

What this tutorial does not establish

  • It does not establish minimum laptop hardware requirements or performance expectations.
  • It is not evidence that its older Compose file and connection settings are compatible with every current Dremio, Nessie, MinIO, or Docker release.
  • It does not show that every storage integration or queryable format documented for Dremio works identically in the local environment.
  • Its sample access credentials and HTTP configuration are not secure defaults for production or shared use.

For a current implementation, consult the documentation for the specific Dremio release and deployment, then verify compatible versions and configuration for the catalog, object store, and table format you plan to use.
