To build a Grafana Geomap of traffic and threat score, return location-bearing query results, select the matching location mode, and encode the two measures in a way that readers can interpret. A practical starting point is marker size for traffic and conditional color for threat score. The map displays those values; it does not define what a threat score means or which values should trigger action.

Prepare the query data

Grafana Geomap requires geospatial data. Grafana Labs describes it as a way to view and customize a world map using geospatial data in its Geomap documentation. Shape the query result so each record represents one map point or one deliberately chosen geographic bucket.

Include a supported location value, a traffic measure with its unit and aggregation window, a threat score, and a label or identifier that helps readers recognize the place. Optional time, category, or investigation details can support inspection in the tooltip. These measures and fields are useful design choices for this dashboard, not Geomap-mandated columns.

  • Location: latitude and longitude, geohash, or a lookup value such as a geographic code.
  • Traffic: define the unit and aggregation window, such as the count of events over a named interval.
  • Threat score: confirm its range, direction, and interpretation with the score owner.
  • Context: retain the place name or ID and any time or category fields needed to explain a point.

Avoid combining records at incompatible geographic granularities or aggregation windows in one layer unless the map clearly explains the difference. Confirm with the telemetry owner what a location represents and whether it is appropriate to expose geographically.

Choose the location mode and map layer

In the Geomap panel, select the query result and configure its location mode to match the returned fields. Auto mode looks for recognized field names; if it does not identify the location correctly, choose the appropriate mode and map the fields explicitly. Grafana documents support for coordinate, geohash, and lookup-based locations in its Geomap reference.

  • Coordinates: use when the query returns latitude and longitude; verify that each field is mapped to the correct coordinate.
  • Geohash: use when the query returns geohash values at the chosen geographic precision.
  • Lookup: use when the query returns a supported geographic lookup value; select the corresponding field.

Then choose the layer for the pattern you want readers to see. Markers suit distinct sites or regions that readers should inspect. A heatmap emphasizes spatial density rather than individual points. A network layer is relevant when the data represents graph relationships and includes geospatial node data. Grafana supports multiple map layers, so select a layer based on the question the map needs to answer.

Encode traffic and threat score without implying false precision

A useful initial design is to map traffic magnitude to marker size and threat score to conditional color. If score is the primary concern, you may instead use size for score and color for traffic, but check that the result remains legible and that the two measures are not easily confused. Grafana supports marker sizing from a field and conditional colors; see its Geomap styling documentation.

Set color thresholds using the score owner’s scale and operational meaning, not by treating Grafana’s display defaults as security policy. Grafana’s threshold documentation gives the definition: “A threshold is a value or limit you set for a metric that’s reflected visually when it’s met or exceeded.” It lists 80 = red and base = green as default display settings; these do not establish your score’s range, direction, calibration, or response cutoff. Document the scale and chosen cutoffs, and make missing or invalid scores visually distinguishable from ordinary low values.

State the traffic aggregation window and whether marker sizing uses a fixed range or autoscaling. Without those details, size differences can be difficult to compare across views or time periods. The correct choices depend on your data and intended interpretation; Grafana’s styling controls do not prescribe them.

Make map points explainable and actionable

Configure marker tooltips to answer the reader’s immediate questions: where is this, when was it measured, how much traffic is represented, and what about the score warrants attention? Tooltip content depends on the query and transformations, so retain the fields needed for inspection upstream. Grafana documents marker tooltips and Geomap data links in its Geomap reference.

If an investigation or detail dashboard exists, add a data link from the map to that destination. Preserve relevant variables or the time range when appropriate so the destination retains useful source-panel context. Grafana data links can point to panels, dashboards, or external resources.

Validate the map before relying on it

Check the actual query output and rendered panel, not just the configuration:

  • Confirm the selected location mode and field mappings match the returned data; verify coordinate order and that points appear in the intended geography.
  • Check whether aggregation hides multiple records at the same point, and ensure each point or bucket has the intended meaning.
  • Inspect the legend, tooltip fields, marker-size range, traffic window, and fixed-range or autoscaling behavior.
  • Verify that missing scores look different from valid scores and that the color thresholds match the score owner’s documented interpretation.
  • Test the data link and confirm it opens the intended investigation destination with useful context.

The appropriate field names, score direction and range, geographic granularity, aggregation interval, and response actions depend on the telemetry and scoring systems behind your queries. Confirm those choices with their owners before using the map for operational decisions.

Does Geomap require a separate plugin?

Grafana lists Geomap as included with Grafana; its core visualization is not a separate required plugin purchase. Availability and behavior should still be checked against the Grafana version and deployment you use.
