You can use ToolJet MCP and an MCP-compatible coding agent to scaffold a working device register: an app with a table of devices, a create and edit form, and a database table behind it. The platform handles the scaffolding. You still decide what a device record contains, who may change it, and how its status moves through its lifecycle.

What ToolJet MCP does for a device register

ToolJet’s official MCP overview describes the server as a bridge between an AI coding agent and the ToolJet instance where your apps live. In its words, “ToolJet MCP is a server that exposes your ToolJet instance to an AI coding agent, so the agent can build and modify apps in the workspace you already work in, without you leaving your editor.” (ToolJet, official ToolJet MCP Overview.)

According to the same overview, the agent can build apps from prompts, inspect connected datasources, create ToolJet DB tables, seed rows, write queries, and manage permissions. Every action runs with the access rights of the owner of the personal access token (PAT) the client uses. ToolJet’s audit logs record platform activity, including the acting user and the action taken.

For a device register, that means the agent is not limited to writing a mock-up. It can create the underlying table and the screens that read and write it. It also means the quality of the result depends heavily on the instructions you give and on the permissions attached to the token.

What the official documentation covers, and what it does not

It helps to separate what ToolJet’s documentation demonstrates from what you must design yourself.

  • General app generation. ToolJet’s app-generation guide describes the agent inspecting workspace datasources, creating the app, adding queries, binding components to those queries, and returning links for editing and testing. The guide notes that naming the datasource and the entities you want improves the first result.
  • ToolJet Database. ToolJet DB is available on both ToolJet Cloud and self-hosted deployments. It offers a spreadsheet-style interface and a SQL editor. It supports primary keys to identify records uniquely and foreign keys to relate one table to another.
  • MCP tool reference. The official reference lists tools for creating apps, creating ToolJet DB tables, inserting rows, adding and running queries, linting planned changes, applying validated changes, and validating an app.
  • Not covered. The documentation does not provide a device-register template, a canonical device schema, a prescribed field list, or a step-by-step recipe for asset tracking. Everything device-specific in this guide is an illustrative choice you would make for your own organization.

Before you start: set the boundaries

Settle three things before you connect any agent. Each one changes what the agent is able to do.

Choose the workspace and the datasource

Decide whether the register will live in ToolJet Database or in a database or API that is already connected to your ToolJet workspace. ToolJet DB is the simpler path when no suitable source exists. An existing source makes sense when it is already the trusted record of your devices, such as an inventory system your finance or IT team maintains. The table below sets out the trade-off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Question ToolJet DB as the register store An existing connected database or API
Setup ownership The table is created and maintained inside ToolJet. The source’s owner keeps schema and access control outside ToolJet.
Source of truth The register becomes the record. Choose this if no other system holds device data. The existing system stays authoritative. The app reads from or writes to it.
Relationships Primary and foreign keys are available for linked tables, such as assignments. Depends on what the existing source supports. Not stated in ToolJet’s MCP pages.
Agent reach The agent can create and seed tables in the workspace. The agent works with the source as exposed through the connection.

The sources establish what ToolJet DB can do. They do not decide which option is right for a given organization.

Pick a token that matches the task

Because the agent acts with the PAT owner’s permissions, the token is your access boundary. A token belonging to an administrator lets the agent do whatever that administrator can do in the workspace. Use a token from an account with only the rights needed to build this app.

Point development at development data

ToolJet warns that agent exploration is nondeterministic and that any data reachable in the workspace may be read. It recommends connecting MCP to an instance whose development environment points at development data, not live asset records. Seed sample rows in that environment rather than importing a production inventory.

Connecting MCP: step by step

ToolJet’s setup guide covers both ToolJet Cloud and self-hosted instances, with separate instructions for each supported client. The general sequence is the same in every case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm your client’s runtime. For the relevant MCP client setups, ToolJet’s documentation specifies Node.js 20 or newer.
  2. In the target workspace, create a personal access token for the account that should act on the workspace. Keep the token secret.
  3. Open the setup guide for your client and add the ToolJet MCP server using the instance URL. Use HTTPS for the instance URL.
  4. Do not paste the plain-text token into a configuration file you intend to commit to version control. Store it in the client’s secret mechanism or an environment variable that the client reads at runtime.
  5. Start a new agent session and confirm it can see the workspace’s datasources before you ask it to build anything.

If the agent cannot list your datasources, check the instance URL and the token before you change the prompt. A prompt cannot fix an authentication problem.

Ask for a bounded first version

ToolJet’s example prompt for app generation is “Build me a tickets dashboard on my ToolJet DB.” It shows the pattern: describe the outcome in plain language and name where the data should live. You can apply the same pattern to a device register. The prompt below is an illustrative example, not a tested recipe.

Build me a device register on my ToolJet DB in the development workspace.
Create a devices table with these fields: asset_id (unique, required),
device_type, assigned_to, location, status, purchase_date, warranty_end.
Build one page with:
- a table view listing devices with search by asset_id and filter by status
- a create/edit form bound to the devices table
Return links to the app for editing and testing.
Do not delete or alter any existing tables.

Keep the first version small. A table, a form, and a filter are enough to check the model. Once the basics behave as expected, you can ask for additional pages or related tables in a second prompt. Asking for everything at once makes it harder to tell which part of the output needs correction.

Review the generated model and bindings

Generated output is a starting point. Before anyone enters real data, check the following in the saved app and in the table itself:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Identifier uniqueness. Confirm that the asset identifier is a primary key or is otherwise enforced as unique. Otherwise two records can describe the same device.
  • Required fields. Decide which fields must be present to save a record. The generated form may not match your intent.
  • Status vocabulary. A free-text status field drifts quickly. Consider a fixed list, and confirm the form offers only those values.
  • Relationships. If assignments or maintenance history matter, decide whether they belong in separate tables linked by foreign keys, or in the devices table. A single table is simpler; linked tables keep history without overwriting it.
  • Read and write operations. Trace each query and each component binding. Confirm which screens read, which write, and which can delete.

The decision for each item belongs to your organization. ToolJet DB supports the mechanisms, but the official documentation does not say which model fits any particular business.

Validate before handing the app over

MCP’s tool reference includes a lint step for planned changes, an apply step for validated changes, and a validation step for an existing app. Use them. Then check the behavior by hand in the development environment: create a device, edit it, search for it, filter it, and try a duplicate asset identifier.

ToolJet’s guidance notes that an agent with browser access may open the built app to check it. Treat that as a convenience rather than as your own test. The tool reference also lists five destructive tools that require explicit confirmation: deleting pages, queries, components, tables, or columns. If an agent proposes one of these during a revision, read the proposal before you confirm it.

The tool reference also reports 50 tools in total, according to ToolJet’s Supported Tools documentation as checked in 2026. That is a product inventory count, not a measure of how well the agent builds apps. It may change between releases, so check the current page before you quote it.

Decision What the platform provides What you must define
Device fields Table creation and seeding Which fields exist, their types, and which are required
Lifecycle Editable columns and forms The allowed statuses and the rules for moving between them
Permissions Token-based access and audit logs of actions Who may view, create, edit, or delete records, and whether the agent’s token should be scoped differently from people’s accounts
Audit requirements Audit logs of platform activity Whether the logs meet your retention and review needs. Not stated in the official overview.
Scan or label workflow Not described in the MCP documentation Whether devices need barcode or QR labels, and how those codes map to asset identifiers

A barcode or QR scanner and printed asset labels may suit some organizations’ broader asset processes. The official build workflow does not require or recommend them, so this guide does not treat them as part of the register.

Limits of what is established

The facts in this guide come from ToolJet’s own documentation as checked in 2026. No ToolJet device-register sample, benchmark, or independent study has been cited here, and no build of a device register is reported. The example prompt, fields, and statuses are suggestions for you to adapt. The billing position is also worth verifying: ToolJet’s MCP overview says operations run on the AI client’s model subscription rather than consuming ToolJet AI credits. Billing and model terms can change, so confirm them on the current pages before you plan a budget around them.

Start with a small table, a single form, and a clear permission model. Expand only after those behave as you intended.
