If you want a 5G phone for under $300 in the United States, the most concrete option we can document is the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G with 128GB of storage, listed at $199.99 for the unlocked model in Samsung’s March 2026 manufacturer pricing. Motorola’s Moto G Power (2026) and Moto G (2026), along with the CMF Phone 2 Pro, appear in editorial roundups of budget phones, but we could not confirm current prices for them, so treat them as candidates to check rather than finished recommendations.
This guide uses $300 as its price ceiling. Pricing and carrier conditions here are US-specific. Readers in other countries should check local listings, since model names, bands, and offers differ by market.
Why the model and carrier variant matter more than the “5G” label

Being named in a roundup shows that editors considered a phone a budget choice at the time of writing. It does not show that the phone is in stock or priced under $300 today.
Galaxy A17 5G: buy the variant, not the name
The Galaxy A17 5G is the only candidate here with a documented price, but that price belongs to one specific SKU. Samsung’s US store carries an AT&T-specific Galaxy A17 5G 128GB page. That is a different listing from the unlocked SKU in the March 2026 pricing document, and the two should not be compared as if they were the same product. A carrier version may carry a monthly plan requirement, device-payment terms, or a lock period, and those conditions change the real cost of the phone.

- Confirm the seller is offering the unlocked model if you want to use any carrier. If the listing names a carrier, treat it as that carrier’s variant.
- Check the 5G bands the model supports against your carrier’s published coverage and device-compatibility information.
- Compare the unlocked price with the total cost of any carrier offer, including the required plan, any device-payment schedule, and what happens if you leave early.
- Confirm stock and price on the retailer’s product page on the day you buy, because MSRP documents can be out of date.
- Check the warranty terms the seller lists for that exact model.
Battery claims from published tests
Tom’s Guide reported battery results for two budget Motorola models in its own testing. Its published figures were 18 hours 30 minutes for the Moto G Power and more than 19 hours for the Moto G. These are Tom’s Guide’s results under its test conditions, not independent measurements from this guide, and we did not repeat the tests. Checking what matters for your use
A single budget model is not the best choice for every reader. Match the phone to your main use:
- Long days away from a charger: prioritize the battery results from a test you can read the methodology for, and check the charging speed and whether a charger is included in the box.
- Video and reading: check the screen type, size, brightness, and refresh rate in the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model.
- Photos in dim rooms or at night: look for reviews that show night-mode samples from the same model. This guide does not have a verified low-light comparison for these phones.
- Keeping the phone for years: check the manufacturer’s stated update commitment for that exact model on its own support or product page. We did not establish a support period for any candidate here, and a budget price does not guarantee long software support.

If you want a documented price, the Galaxy A17 5G 128GB unlocked model at $199.99 MSRP is the clearest starting point, provided its live price, stock, bands, and warranty match what you need. If you want a Motorola model, the Moto G Power (2026) and Moto G (2026) are the phones to price-check first, because they appear in more than one budget roundup, but you should confirm their current prices and variants before you decide. The CMF Phone 2 Pro is worth comparing only if its US availability and band support are confirmed for your carrier.
