Buddy is a 60 cm-tall mobile companion robot from Blue Frog Robotics, designed to interact through voice, vision, and touch. It can roll around, respond to people, and support activities such as learning, telepresence, and group engagement. But its movement has clear limits, and the company’s current materials do not confirm that families can buy it today or what it costs.
What is the Buddy robot?
Blue Frog Robotics presents Buddy as an emotional companion robot intended to assist, educate, entertain, and connect people. The company describes a robot that interacts through voice, vision, and touch, with an Android SDK and application platform for custom uses. Its current overview lists its height as 60 cm.
The manufacturer’s product sheet says Buddy can express 12 different emotions and respond to touch, including being stroked or teased. For voice interaction, the user guide describes a wake phrase: say “Ok Buddy” to enter listening mode. These are product descriptions, not independent assessments of how accurately Buddy recognizes speech, how consistently it responds, or how it performs in a family home. See the Buddy User Guide and Buddy companion product sheet.
Can Buddy move around a home?
Buddy rolls and is described as avoiding obstacles. The user guide says it can pass certain thresholds and inclined surfaces, but it cannot climb stairs or open doors. That means its practical usefulness depends on the layout: it needs an accessible route between the places where the family expects to use it.

- Stairs: Buddy cannot climb them, so it cannot independently travel between floors.
- Doors: It cannot open a closed door; the route must be open.
- Thresholds and ramps: The guide says it can cross certain thresholds and inclined planes, not every transition. Check the specific route rather than assuming all floors and thresholds are passable.
- Obstacles: Obstacle avoidance is a stated feature, but it is not a guarantee that Buddy will navigate every home, narrow passage, cable, or floor plan.
Before considering it for a particular room or routine, map the route and identify stairs, closed doors, tight turns, thresholds, and objects that could block its path. The guide’s mobility description is not a promise of universal home navigation.
What does Buddy do for children and families?
Blue Frog Robotics describes education and inclusion uses such as customizable content, social and emotional skills activities, motor-skills tasks, and telepresence for children who cannot attend school. The company says a child can control Buddy remotely with a tablet or smartphone. These are described capabilities and use cases; they do not establish that Buddy improves learning, development, or wellbeing in independent evaluations. Details appear on the company’s education and inclusion page.

For a family, the key distinction is between an activity platform and a proven developmental tool. The company describes activities that Buddy can support, but the available materials do not provide independent results showing what outcomes families should expect.
What are its eldercare and hospitality uses?
Blue Frog Robotics also describes Buddy for senior-care settings, including memory games and quizzes, conversation, telepresence, group activities, and caregiver information broadcasts. Its senior-care page mentions physiological monitoring through a connected accessory, but does not establish the accessory’s exact identity, compatibility, regulatory status, availability, or medical evidence. That description is not enough to treat Buddy as a medical device or rely on it for health monitoring.

These institutional and business use cases are evidence of a broader product focus; they do not by themselves show that a family-focused version is currently sold to consumers.
