Bryan Johnson’s reported claim that “the best anti-aging therapies are filters, retouch and lighting” is a joke about looking younger in pictures, not evidence that photo filters reverse biological aging. Decrypt reported the remark on October 6, 2026, amid renewed attention to Johnson’s costly longevity project.
What did Bryan Johnson mean by filters working better?
Johnson was referring to image-making: a filter can alter how a face looks on screen, retouching can change visible details, and lighting can affect how a portrait appears. These are photographic effects. They do not show that a person’s health, lifespan, or underlying biological age has changed.

How photo effects differ from anti-aging claims

What is known about Johnson’s longevity project
Decrypt reported that Johnson has said he spends $2 million a year trying to make his body act 18 again. That is an attributed spending claim, not an audited current expenditure. A previous Decrypt profile used a $4 million figure in its headline, but that is historical context with a different time frame and framing—not a current annual total. Decrypt and ABC News reported that Johnson’s stated goal is immortality by 2039. That is an aspiration, not a forecast, demonstrated result, or established scientific possibility. ABC News also reported Johnson’s disclosure of autoimmune gastritis and described a shift in his company’s stated focus toward tools to identify and address health problems. ABC News reported that Johnson’s work described as “cloning” involved creating induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), which the feature distinguishes from human cloning. It also quoted University of Sydney researcher Brooke Nickel cautioning against conflating sound public-health practices with commercial interests: “So I am sceptical and think we should be careful not to confuse good public health practices with vested interests.”

The contrast is the point: a high-profile, expensive effort to pursue longevity alongside a wry observation that ordinary image tools can make someone look younger in a photo. The remark does not compare a filter with a medical intervention in a clinical test, and the cited coverage gives no head-to-head evidence that one produces better health or longevity outcomes.

ABC News also reported that Johnson’s partner, Kate Tolo, had received diagnoses after a period of testing and said she tracked 14 million data points related to her menstrual cycle. That number describes her stated measurement protocol; it is not evidence that the process produced clinical benefit. Tolo told ABC News, “I didn’t know how bad the literature was around female health.”

- It does not show: that these photo techniques alter biological aging, or that Johnson’s particular longevity program has been demonstrated to reverse it.

For readers, the practical takeaway is simple: use a filter or better lighting to change a portrait if that is the goal, but do not treat an appearance change as a health intervention. The available coverage offers no clinical evidence that Johnson’s regimen reverses aging.
