When several features on the same website use localStorage, they share the same origin-wide storage area. A naming convention or namespace can make keys easier to own and manage, but it cannot expand browser quotas, make synchronous calls asynchronous, or isolate one feature’s data from another.

The available documentation for namespaced-storage does not establish its API or implementation, so this article does not attribute specific features or benefits to the project. The browser-platform limits below explain the problem a namespacing approach may address—and the limits any such approach still faces.

Why teams can run into localStorage key conflicts

localStorage is shared by documents with the same origin: the same scheme, host, and port. A different path does not create a separate storage area. That means pages such as example.com/settings and example.com/dashboard can access the same local storage. The browser’s boundary is the origin, not your team, feature, route, or module. MDN’s Web Storage API guide describes this sharing model.

As a codebase grows, separately developed features can choose overlapping keys, overwrite values, or make cleanup difficult. A namespace—often a consistent prefix or structured key convention—can help teams organize ownership and reduce accidental collisions. That is an application-level convention, not browser-enforced isolation: code that can access the origin’s storage can still access keys from other features.

Synology BeeStation Plus 8TB Personal Cloud Storage Device (BST170-8T)
  • Equipped with an Intel Celeron J4125 processor and 4 GB DDR4 memory—providing a significant performance boost over standard personal cloud drives.
  • License-free NVR surveillance system: Add up to four Synology cameras for secure 24/7 monitoring and AI-driven detection alerts without requiring a subscription.
  • Local AI: Uses an onboard GPU to run photo recognition, making it easy to search and sort images by subject or location without touching the public cloud.

  • Dedicated Mac Backup Storage: Use Time Machine to back up your Mac with dedicated storage space (up to 2TB on the 4TB BeeStation or 4TB on the 8TB BeeStation.)

What a namespace can—and cannot—change

  • It can help with organization. Consistent key ownership makes it easier to identify which feature writes a value and which cleanup process is responsible for it.
  • It does not raise storage limits. Adding a prefix changes key names, not the browser’s quota or eviction policy.
  • It does not change execution behavior. Web Storage operations are synchronous, so they can block JavaScript while they run. A wrapper or namespace does not make those calls asynchronous.
  • It is not a security boundary. Namespacing does not prevent other code running on the same origin from reading or changing the data.
  • It does not guarantee persistence. Browser policy, storage pressure, and eviction can affect stored data.

These are platform-level limits. The available project information does not establish what namespaced-storage specifically implements, how its API works, or which browsers it supports.

How much browser storage is available?

MDN’s current guidance describes Web Storage limits of 5 MiB for localStorage and 5 MiB for sessionStorage per origin. A write that exceeds the available quota can fail with QuotaExceededError. These figures describe Web Storage, not every browser storage API, and browser rules can change. See MDN’s storage quotas and eviction criteria.

Other storage systems, including IndexedDB, Cache API, and the File System API, use browser-specific quota and eviction rules. A larger quota does not make data permanently safe: browsers can remove stored data under applicable policies or conditions. Treat browser storage as recoverable when the application needs to protect important user data.

WebKit’s published quota limits are upper bounds

In an August 10, 2023 policy update, WebKit described limits applying with Safari 17.0 and the corresponding iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma releases. Its published upper bounds were up to 60% of total disk for an origin and 80% overall for browser apps; for other WebKit apps, the figures were up to 15% per origin and 20% overall. These are environment- and app-type-specific ceilings, not guaranteed usable capacity. WebKit also describes quota failures and eviction conditions in Updates to Storage Policy.

Handle failed writes and check usage estimates

Do not assume a write will succeed just because an earlier write did. Catch storage errors and decide what the application should do if it cannot save a value. For small, disposable preferences, that may mean showing a warning or continuing without the change; for important data, provide a recovery or sync path appropriate to the product.

try {
  localStorage.setItem("settings:theme", "dark");
} catch (error) {
  if (error instanceof DOMException && error.name === "QuotaExceededError") {
    // Explain the failure or use an application-appropriate fallback.
  } else {
    throw error;
  }
}

The example illustrates error handling; it is not a documented namespaced-storage API. MDN also documents navigator.storage.estimate(), which provides estimated usage and quota. An estimate can help with diagnosis, but it is not a reservation of future capacity. The MDN Storage API guide covers storage-management capabilities, including persistence-related behavior; browser support and behavior remain browser-mediated.

When localStorage is the wrong fit

Use the data shape and workload—not a namespace alone—to decide whether Web Storage is appropriate. localStorage is a synchronous, string-based key-value store, which can suit small settings that are read and written infrequently. Larger or more structured data, indexing needs, or frequent operations may call for a different browser storage API. IndexedDB is one alternative to evaluate for structured data and asynchronous access, but there is no single best choice for every application.

  • Small, replaceable preferences: Web Storage may be sufficient if synchronous access and its limits fit the workload.
  • Structured records or more demanding access patterns: evaluate IndexedDB and the application’s data and indexing requirements.
  • Cached responses or files: consider APIs designed for those data types, such as Cache API or the File System API, where appropriate.
  • Critical user data: do not treat browser storage as the only durable copy unless the product’s requirements and recovery design support that choice.

Quota, eviction, and persistence behavior differ among browsers and storage systems; consult the browser-specific constraints for the target audience rather than assuming that an alternative has unlimited or permanent capacity.

Browser extensions need a separate storage decision

Extension code should not assume that a page-oriented localStorage wrapper applies to extension storage. Chrome’s extension documentation says extension service workers cannot use Web Storage, while content scripts share Web Storage with the host page. Chrome provides a separate extension storage API. Check the extension context and its requirements in Chrome’s chrome.storage API documentation before choosing a storage abstraction.
