The Cleveland Browns lost 34–10 at Jacksonville in Week 1, then won their next three games. After beating Pittsburgh 27–24 on October 1, Cleveland stood 3–1 and first in the AFC North in standings captured October 3, 2026. Those results establish the turnaround in the standings; they do not, by themselves, explain what caused it.
What happened after the Browns’ Week 1 loss?
Cleveland’s first game was a 34–10 loss at Jacksonville on September 13. The Browns’ official Week 1 game center notes that Andre Szmyt’s 26-yard field goal supplied the team’s first points of the 2026 season and that Raheim Sanders returned a kickoff 74 yards.
The Browns then won three straight: 23–19 at Tampa Bay on September 20, 21–18 against Carolina on September 27, and 27–24 against Pittsburgh on October 1. The official schedule lists all four results.
Browns record and AFC North standings after Week 4
In the NFL standings captured October 3, Cleveland was 3–1, with a .750 winning percentage and a three-game winning streak. The Browns were first in the AFC North at that point—not division champions, and not assured of holding the lead.

The NFL AFC North standings list Cleveland with 81 points scored and 95 allowed, for a minus-14 net point total across four games. That scoring margin is a description of the opening quarter of the season, not a forecast. The division table was an early-season snapshot: Baltimore and Cincinnati had each played one fewer game than Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

The available results establish that Cleveland responded to the Jacksonville loss with three wins, but they do not establish why. They are not enough to attribute the change to coaching, personnel, injuries, offensive or defensive performance, or particular turning points in the three wins.

Cleveland’s May 14 schedule announcement said the team would open with two road games for the 11th time in franchise history and for the first time since 1986; the official schedule confirms the trips to Jacksonville and Tampa Bay. The announcement identifies Todd Monken as head coach and discusses the Florida openers, but it concerns the schedule, not the later results. It does not provide an explanation for the winning streak.
