The Cleveland Browns beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 27–24 on Thursday, October 1, 2026, when kicker Andre Szmyt made a 56-yard field goal with 10 seconds left. Pittsburgh had erased a 21–7 deficit to tie the game at 24, but Cleveland answered with a late drive to secure its third straight win.
How Cleveland won
The Associated Press report carried by theScore on October 2 described a game that swung sharply after Cleveland built a two-touchdown lead. Pittsburgh opened the scoring with a 78-yard drive that lasted 17 plays, ending when Roman Wilson scored on a 12-yard jet sweep.
Denzel Ward intercepted Aaron Rodgers early in the second quarter. Cleveland then scored three touchdowns before halftime: Jaleel McLaughlin ran 28 yards for one, Quinshon Judkins scored from two yards out, and Deshaun Watson threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Harold Fannin Jr. Pittsburgh added a field goal before the break, making the halftime score 21–10.
The Steelers pulled closer in the fourth quarter. Rodgers threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Darnell Washington, but Pittsburgh missed its two-point attempt and trailed 21–16. Later, Rodgers connected with Pat Freiermuth for a three-yard touchdown and ran in the tying two-point conversion, bringing the score to 24–24 with 1:44 remaining.

What the result meant in the October 2 report
At the time of the AP report, Cleveland was 3–1 and Pittsburgh was 2–2. The report said the Browns had won eight straight Thursday night games, then the active longest streak and fourth longest in NFL history. It also noted that Pittsburgh was 0–10 on the road against AFC North opponents on Thursdays, and that Cleveland had last opened a season 3–1 in 2021. Those streak and historical figures are the AP’s 2026 reporting, not a current record check.
The October 2 report listed Pittsburgh’s next game as a home matchup with Indianapolis and Cleveland’s as a visit to the New York Jets, both scheduled for October 11, 2026. That is the schedule as reported at the time; it has not been independently rechecked here.
