Futurism reported on September 30, 2026, that Brown Brothers Media had stopped publishing across much of its portfolio after the outlet’s investigation into the company. Futurism also observed that many of the sites had become difficult to find in Google Search or no longer appeared in Google News. It did not establish that Google caused the changes, and Google did not respond to its request for comment.

What happened, and when?

  1. September 17, 2026: Futurism published an investigation describing Brown Brothers Media’s acquisition strategy and high-volume AI publishing model, alongside concerns it reported about plagiarism, fabricated reporting, and author identities.
  2. September 18, 2026: Futurism published a list of publications associated with the company.
  3. September 30, 2026: Futurism reported that publishing had stopped across much of the portfolio and described apparent losses in Google visibility. The duration of the halt was unknown when that report appeared.

The timing supports saying the halt followed Futurism’s investigation. It does not establish why the company paused publishing or prove that Google imposed a penalty. Futurism said neither Google nor Brown Brothers Media responded to its requests for comment on the halt.

Which sites were affected?

Futurism’s September 30 report described varied, time-specific conditions rather than a uniform shutdown. It said MakeTechEasier and Ideapod still appeared in Google results, while visibility for much of the broader portfolio appeared to have declined.

Publication or group What Futurism reported on September 30, 2026
VegOut Publication had halted; the site appeared to have removed posts published since May.
Silicon Canals No new material was being posted, according to the report.
Space Daily, Hack Spirit, and Scandinavian Standard Named among the titles whose Google visibility appeared affected.
MakeTechEasier and Ideapod Still appeared in Google results at the time of the report.
Other portfolio sites Futurism described much of the broader portfolio as suppressed or difficult to find; the report did not supply a definitive site-by-site account.

These observations distinguish Google News from Google Search only in broad terms: Futurism said many sites seemed to have disappeared from Google News and become difficult to find in Search. The report did not identify an official action or establish that every listed site had the same status.

What did Futurism report about Brown Brothers Media?

Futurism identified Justin, Lachlan, and Brendan Brown as the company’s co-founders. Its September 17 investigation described a strategy of acquiring online publications and using them to publish large volumes of AI-generated material. It also reported staff reductions and raised concerns about plagiarism, fabricated reporting, and authors presented as journalists or subject-matter experts. Those are Futurism’s reported findings and allegations, not legal findings.

The company’s own editorial framework describes AI tools as a substantial part of its publications’ production and acknowledges inadequate controls over contributor identity and first-person material. That is Brown Brothers Media’s account of its practices; it is distinct from Futurism’s reporting.

Futurism also reported two differently defined measures of the network’s scale: Brown Brothers Media claimed 50 million page views per month in 2025, while Similarweb estimated an average of 64.7 million visits per month over the year before the September 2026 investigation. Page views and visits are not interchangeable, and Futurism cautioned that outsiders cannot verify the company’s traffic without internal data.

Does Google prohibit AI-generated articles?

No. Google’s Search guidance says quality is the focus regardless of how content is produced, while drawing a line at automation used primarily to manipulate rankings. Its February 8, 2023 guidance states: “Using automation—including AI—to generate content with the primary purpose of manipulating ranking in search results is a violation of our spam policies.” Google’s later documentation also warns that generating many pages without adding value for users may violate its scaled content abuse policy.

Those are general rules, not a finding that Brown Brothers Media or any named site violated them. Google News policy separately expects clear dates and bylines, plus information about authors, publishers, and the company or network behind content. The policy also says material ineligible for Google News surfaces may still appear elsewhere in Search if it complies with the relevant policies. Neither policy establishes the cause of the visibility changes Futurism observed.
