The Brother MFC-J5740DW is a four-function inkjet all-in-one for small offices that need A3 printing, two paper trays and faxing. Its key limitation is that A3 support is for printing: Brother’s cited datasheet lists scanning and copying only up to A4. Manufacturer specifications suggest useful office capacity, but they are not a substitute for independent testing of speed, print quality or reliability.
What the Brother MFC-J5740DW does
Brother positions the MFC-J5740DW as an office and workgroup printer. It combines printing, copying, scanning and faxing in one inkjet device. The UK product listing describes the model and its office-oriented features: Brother UK MFC-J5740DW product page.
Can it print, scan and copy A3?
It can print A3, which is useful for larger charts, spreadsheets, posters and other office documents. Do not assume that its A3 print support means it can scan or copy at that size: Brother’s Nordic datasheet lists A3/A4 printing but scan and copy only up to A4. The datasheet is available as a Brother Europe specification sheet.

Brother UK lists two 250-sheet paper trays and a 100-sheet multipurpose tray. The separate trays can help keep different paper sizes or types loaded, while the multipurpose tray provides another way to feed paper. These capacities come from Brother’s UK listing, not an independent assessment of how the printer handles a particular workload.

Brother’s Nordic datasheet gives maximum A4 speeds of 28 images per minute (ipm) for one-sided printing and 21 ipm for two-sided printing, for both monochrome and colour. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured results; actual performance can vary with document, settings and print conditions. Compare speed figures with other printers only when the page size, print mode and measurement method match.
Ink cartridges and running costs
For the UK market, Brother lists cartridges in its LC422 family. Its listing gives standard cartridges a yield of 550 pages; the listed LC422XL cartridges are rated for 3,000 pages in black and 1,500 pages per colour cartridge. Those are manufacturer-advertised yields for the listed variants, not guaranteed results for every user. Check the cartridge family sold for your country before buying: the UK LC422 listing should not be treated as universal. See Brother’s UK product and consumables listing.

Is it a good fit for a small office?
The documented feature set suits a small office that needs A3 output, print/copy/scan/fax functions and capacity for more than one paper size or type. The A4-only scan and copy limit is important if your workflow includes digitising or duplicating oversized originals. The advertised XL cartridge yields can inform a purchasing comparison, but they do not establish real-world ink costs without local prices.
There is no independent test evidence here for print or photo quality, setup experience, reliability, noise or real-world speed. Treat those as unanswered questions rather than assuming that the manufacturer’s specifications prove how the printer will perform in daily use. Price, stock, delivery and warranty terms can also vary by market and are not established by the cited listings.
