The Brother HL-L5210DN is a print-only monochrome laser printer built for brisk office document work over wired Ethernet or USB. Brother rates the US model at up to 48 pages per minute and includes automatic duplex printing; it also supports optional paper trays for higher capacity. It does not scan or copy, and Brother Japan’s specifications list wired LAN and USB but no wireless LAN. This review assesses published specifications and available test information, not hands-on use.

What kind of printer is the HL-L5210DN?

It is a single-function, black-and-white laser printer. That makes it a potential fit for a small office or workgroup that mainly prints text documents, but not for someone who needs a scanner, copier, color output, or built-in Wi-Fi. Which? also identifies it as a standard laser printer that prints in black and white only and does not scan or copy.

How fast does it print?

Brother USA rates the printer at up to 48 pages per minute (ppm), with a first page in under 6.7 seconds. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent timed results. Duplex printing is slower: Brother Japan lists approximately 48 ppm for simplex A4 printing and approximately 24 pages per minute for duplex A4 printing. If most jobs are double-sided, the duplex figure is the more relevant speed reference.

Brother USA specifies a maximum resolution of up to 1200 × 1200 dpi. That describes the printer’s rated resolution; it does not establish how a particular document will look in practice. The available Which? result says the model was first reviewed in October 2024 under the current version of its printer test program at that time, but the excerpt does not disclose its measured print quality, speed, running-cost results, or star ratings. It therefore does not support a favorable or unfavorable independent-test verdict.

What paper capacity and connections does it offer?

In Brother USA’s configuration, the standard paper tray holds 250 sheets and the multipurpose tray holds 100, for 350 sheets of input capacity before adding optional trays. The brochure lists a 150-sheet face-down output capacity, a one-line LCD, and 256 MB of memory. Brother Japan also lists a 250-sheet standard tray and 100-sheet multipurpose tray; confirm the exact regional configuration before buying.

The US brochure lists Gigabit Ethernet and Hi-Speed USB 2.0. Brother Japan lists USB and wired LAN, but not wireless LAN. Choose this model if a wired network connection or direct USB connection suits your setup; do not assume it can join a Wi-Fi network.

Optional paper trays

Brother USA lists two optional trays: the LT-5505, which holds 250 sheets, and the LT-6505, which holds 520 sheets. The US brochure says the configuration can reach up to 1,390 sheets. Optional trays, compatibility, and the stated maximum are regional and configuration-dependent, so check local availability and the supported total for the model sold in your market before planning a paper workflow.

What workload is it designed for?

Brother USA recommends monthly print volume of up to 5,000 pages and lists a maximum monthly duty cycle of up to 90,000 pages. These figures mean different things: the recommended volume is the useful workload guide, while the much higher duty-cycle figure is a stated maximum, not a recommended routine monthly target. For an office expecting around 5,000 pages a month, the recommendation is relevant; workloads consistently above it deserve a closer look at a printer designed for that sustained volume.

What will toner and drum replacement involve?

Consumables and their names vary by region. In Brother USA’s brochure, the included TN920 starter toner is rated for 3,000 pages. The listed US toner options are TN920 (3,000 pages), TN920XL (6,000), TN920V (6,600), and TN920XXL (11,000); the DR920 drum is rated for 45,000 pages. These are estimated yields, not guaranteed page counts, and actual results depend on printing conditions and document coverage. Check the exact supply part numbers for your market and printer configuration rather than ordering by a region-mismatched model name.

Consumer Reports reports that one cartridge printed approximately 2,833 pages of black text in its test, identifying firmware 1.08 and limiting the result to Brother-brand toner and the software and firmware versions specified. That is a test-specific observation, not a guarantee for other cartridges, firmware, or workloads, and the available excerpt does not give enough context to compare it directly with Brother’s rated yields.

What warranty applies?

Brother USA lists a one-year limited warranty. Coverage is not universal: Brother Hong Kong lists one-year onsite service in Hong Kong and bring-in service in Macau. Confirm the warranty terms for the country where you buy the printer.

Who should consider it?

  • Good fit: A small office or workgroup that prints mostly black-and-white documents, wants automatic duplexing, and can connect by Ethernet or USB.
  • Potentially useful: An office that needs more input capacity and can obtain compatible optional trays in its region.
  • Look elsewhere: Anyone who needs scanning, copying, color printing, or wireless networking.
  • Check carefully: Buyers comparing long-term costs, regional toner and drum availability, or a workload consistently above Brother USA’s recommended monthly volume.

Verdict

The HL-L5210DN’s published specifications point to a practical wired workgroup printer: up to 48 ppm simplex, automatic duplex printing, and expandable paper input. Its central trade-off is equally clear: it is a monochrome printer with no scanning or copying, and Brother Japan’s specification page lists no wireless LAN. The evidence available supports judging its intended role and rated features, but not an independent conclusion about actual print quality, timed performance, noise, or total running cost.
