The Brother HL-L3240CDW is a colour A4 LED printer that prints only. It does not scan or copy. Brother’s UK listing rates it at 26 A4 pages per minute for single-sided printing and 10 sides per minute for double-sided printing. It has automatic duplex printing, a paper input of 250 sheets in the markets that state that figure, and a choice of USB, wired and wireless connections, though the exact interfaces differ by country.
This review is built from Brother’s own product pages, datasheets and support material, accessed in October 2026. It is not based on lab tests or hands-on use, so print quality, noise and reliability are not judged here. Where a figure is Brother’s, it is labelled as such.
Who this printer suits
The HL-L3240CDW fits a small office or home office that prints colour documents regularly and wants double-sided output without buying a multifunction unit. The UK product specification places it in the print-only category. If you need to scan or copy from the same device, look at a multifunction model instead.
Specifications by market
Brother publishes different levels of detail on each regional site, and some fields appear in one market but not another. The table reports only what each source states. “Not stated” means that regional page does not give the value. It does not mean the printer lacks the feature.

Desk space and placement
Australia lists the outer dimensions as 399 × 399 × 239 mm and the weight as 15.2 kg. Japan gives matching nominal figures. These are body measurements only. Before you buy, measure the spot you have in mind with the paper tray fully extended, and leave room at the front for paper access and at the back and sides for ventilation and cables. At 15.2 kg, get help if you plan to move it often.
Print speed and double-sided printing
Single-sided printing
The UK listing gives up to 26 A4 pages per minute for both mono and colour printing. Brother Japan also lists 26 A4 pages per minute for simplex output. Brother Japan’s first-print figure is up to 12 seconds from ready, under the test conditions Brother describes. That is a manufacturer figure, not a measured result.

The 5 GHz band matters if your router runs a 2.4 GHz network only. Check your router settings and the Europe listing for your model before you buy. If you need a wired connection, confirm that the model you’re buying includes Ethernet in your region.
Paper handling
Australia lists a capacity of up to 250 sheets of 80 gsm plain paper and gives supported formats and media on its product page. Europe also gives 250 sheets. Check the Australian page, or your own country’s page, before buying envelopes, heavy card or other specialist stock, because the summaries available for this review do not confirm those media types.

Toner and running costs
Cartridge codes differ by market
Brother UK identifies the toner as TN-248. Brother Japan’s running-cost example uses TN299XXL. These are different codes for different markets. Match the code to your local listing before buying, and do not assume cartridges sold in one country are interchangeable with another.

What Brother claims
Brother Europe’s datasheet describes the printer as follows: “The colourful and connected HL-L3240CDW is expertly engineered to quietly deliver high-quality documents without compromising on speed.” This is promotional wording. Brother’s pages do not provide independent evidence of quietness, output quality or speed in use, so treat those phrases as Brother’s own description.
The Bottom Line
The HL-L3240CDW suits a small office or home office that prints colour, wants automatic double-sided output and does not need scanning or copying. Its speed, duplex and paper figures are clearly published, but they are Brother’s ratings. Its running-cost figures date from 2023 and apply to Japan. Before buying, confirm the model suffix, the cartridge code, the Wi-Fi band you need and the current local price.
