A 2025 study found that tin ingots recovered from three shipwrecks off Israel and dated to around 1300 BC were made from ores associated with south-west Britain, particularly Cornwall and Devon. The finding is evidence that British tin reached the eastern Mediterranean through long-distance trade. It does not show that a ship sailed directly from Britain to Israel: the proposed route involved traders and exchanges across Europe and the Mediterranean.
What the 2025 study found
Durham University’s account of the study, published on 7 May 2025, says researchers Alan Williams and Benjamin Roberts led the work on tin from three wrecks off the Israeli coast. By comparing chemical and isotope characteristics in the artefacts with those in ores from candidate regions, the researchers linked the ingots to south-west Britain, especially Cornwall and Devon. The claim applies to the studied finds from those wrecks; it is not a conclusion about all Bronze Age tin or every ancient Mediterranean shipwreck.
The result adds evidence for tin moving over long distances during the Bronze Age. Durham described the trade as spanning up to 4,000 km. That figure describes the scale of the reported movement, not proof of a single voyage or direct Britain-to-Israel contact. The university’s account instead describes a likely chain of exchanges involving traders in France, Sardinia and Cyprus.

The likely explanation is staged trade: tin changed hands as it moved between regions, rather than necessarily travelling with one group of merchants or aboard one ship for the entire journey. The available account supports a route involving France, Sardinia and Cyprus, but does not establish the exact itinerary, timing or identity of the traders at each stage.

Durham also estimated that tens of tons of tin were traded each year, in a context where hundreds of tons of copper were in circulation. This is an estimate of trade scale, not a count from an annual shipping or accounting record. It helps convey why a distant source matters: tin was a necessary component of bronze, and supplying it at scale required networks that connected widely separated regions.
How researchers trace tin to an ore region
Archaeologists compare the chemical composition and isotope characteristics of metal objects with those of ores from possible source regions. Durham’s summary describes using chemical and isotope analysis of ores and artefacts. When several characteristics point toward the same region, they can support a provenance conclusion; a single measurement should not be treated as an infallible fingerprint.

Lead isotope evidence needs particular care. Cassiterite, the principal tin ore, has a uranium-thorium-lead isotope system that can affect the ratios measured in tin. Lead from galena or contamination introduced during smelting and casting can also alter an ingot’s lead signature. As a result, the lead signal may reflect the ore’s geological history, another mineral, or processing contamination—not simply the source of the tin itself. Provenance analysis must distinguish those possibilities and should not conflate a metal’s geological origin with the route by which it was traded.
How the Israeli-coast finds compare with Uluburun
Uluburun is a separate wreck, dated to about 1320 BC, and its tin has a different, more complex provenance picture in a 2021 analysis. It should not be treated as confirmation that all Bronze Age shipwreck tin came from Britain.

| Wreck evidence | Date and scale | Reported tin provenance | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Three wrecks off Israel, covered in Durham University’s 2025 account | Around 1300 BC; the ingot count is not stated in that account. | South-west Britain, particularly Cornwall and Devon. | British tin reached the eastern Mediterranean through long-distance exchange; the exact route and individual voyages remain inferred. |
| Uluburun, summarized in the University of Haifa’s record of Powell et al. (2021) | About 1320 BC; at least 117 ingots, roughly one tonne, were raised between 1984 and 1994. | A complex picture: over half of the analyzed ingots had high lead concentrations attributed to a south-central Taurus source, while a lower-lead group was considered most likely associated with the Tienshan Mountains. | The analysis points to different possible sources and highlights the need to account for lead contamination; it does not establish the Israeli wrecks’ provenance. |
The contrast is a reminder that similar-looking cargoes from nearby periods do not necessarily share an origin. The tin itself, lead associated with the ore, and lead introduced during processing can tell different parts of the story.

A 2019 PLOS ONE study had already concluded that Cornish mines were the most likely source for the Israeli tin ingots it examined, dated to the 13th–12th centuries BC. That paper also distinguished its result from the different provenance picture suggested for material from Mochlos and Uluburun. The 2025 account builds on this line of evidence with a broader claim about tin from three Israeli-coast wrecks; it does not erase the distinctions among sites or make the Uluburun result British.

Taken together, the findings support an important but bounded conclusion: Britain was one source of Bronze Age tin that could supply the eastern Mediterranean, and long-distance exchange connected those regions. The evidence does not identify a single continuous route, prove direct voyages, or establish that British tin supplied every wreck or every bronze-working region.
