A ThinkPad 701C or 701CS that appears dead needs diagnosis, not a guessed replacement part. First confirm which model you have, record exactly what happens when you connect power or press the power button, then work through IBM’s service checks before opening the machine. The 701C and 701CS are distinct variants, so do not assume a part that fits one will fit the other.
Identify the ThinkPad and describe the failure
The “Butterfly” is the ThinkPad 701’s expanding TrackWrite keyboard. IBM’s Hardware Maintenance Manual covers the 701C and 701CS as separate models under machine type 2630. Read the label on your computer and keep the complete model information with you when looking up parts or service instructions. A parts listing for a 701C is not proof of compatibility with a 701CS.
Before troubleshooting, write down observable symptoms rather than calling the computer simply “dead.” Note whether the power indicator lights, whether you hear or see signs of POST (the startup self-test), whether the display changes, whether the drive makes noise, and whether any error code appears. Also record whether the machine has its main battery and what happens with the AC adapter connected. An indicator lighting while the computer otherwise does nothing is useful evidence, but it does not identify a particular failed component.

Keep irreplaceable data in mind before testing an old drive. Do not format or otherwise alter it as a first troubleshooting step.

Remove power before opening the laptop
IBM’s ThinkPad 701C/701CS Hardware Maintenance Manual requires removing power before work on any field replaceable unit (FRU): power off, unplug power cords, remove the battery pack, and disconnect interconnecting cables. Follow the manual’s removal order for the part you are servicing, then reverse that sequence for reassembly. Do not open the machine while it is connected to AC or while the main battery is installed.
Inspect both battery areas before applying power
The laptop has two battery-related components that should not be confused. IBM’s service reference describes the CMOS battery as a soldered lithium cell. A community-maintained ThinkPad 701C information page identifies that cell as a 3 V BR1225 and also reports a separate nickel-cadmium backup battery in the bottom compartment.

With all power disconnected, inspect the battery compartment and nearby board areas for leakage, corrosion, damaged connectors, cracked plastic, or signs of prior repair. Keep the two battery systems distinct when identifying a component. Do not substitute a familiar CR2032 on assumption: confirm the actual board markings, cell dimensions, chemistry, and polarity against the service information and the machine in front of you.

Use diagnostics to narrow the fault
Once the machine is safe to test, use the IBM manual’s diagnostics and symptom-to-FRU index to relate what you observed to possible causes. Follow the listed checks for the symptom rather than jumping straight to a system-board replacement. In documented situations, IBM’s guidance includes trying to reseat system boards before replacing them. Reseating is not a universal fix; do it only where the manual directs and after disconnecting power as required.
For each check, record what changed: indicator behavior, display output, error codes, or drive activity. This makes it easier to distinguish a confirmed repair from a hypothesis and prevents repeating steps without learning anything.

Disassemble carefully and verify the repair
Use the manual’s screw references and component sequence for the specific repair. Model-specific information identifies T1 Torx screws on the 701C, and aged or corroded screws may be difficult to remove. Use a well-fitting T1 Torx driver where specified; stop rather than force a slipping driver, which can damage a small screw head. The IBM manual, not a general disassembly video, should control the service order.

IBM’s checkout procedure says to try rebooting the computer to check completed repairs before completely reassembling it. After the repair, reconnect only what is needed for the documented test, restore power safely, and confirm whether the original symptom has changed. If it has not, return to the symptom-to-FRU checks rather than treating a partially completed repair as a success.
Finding model-specific restoration help
Project Butterfly / 701c.org describes restoration guides and reproduction parts for the 701C community. Treat any part listing as a lead, not as confirmation that current stock exists or that a component fits your exact 701C or 701CS. Verify compatibility and condition directly before relying on a listing.
