Starbucks had measurable signs of recovery before its 2026 Pumpkin Spice launch, but the launch itself does not yet prove the turnaround is durable. For the quarter ended June 28, U.S. comparable sales rose 7.9%, with transactions up 4.2%. Starbucks later called August 25 its strongest fall launch day ever in the U.S. and Canada, but did not publish the sales or traffic figures behind that claim.
What does “Starbucks is back” mean?
“Starbucks is back” is CEO Brian Niccol’s description of the company’s progress, not an independently established verdict. At Investor Day on January 29, 2026, he said the company was back while also acknowledging “there’s more work ahead.” Starbucks credited its service, menu innovation and marketing with helping customers respond to its Back to Starbucks plan. Starbucks’ Investor Day announcement also set out FY2028 financial goals; those are targets, not results already achieved.
The useful test is whether customer demand improves over time, and whether sales growth translates into stronger business performance. A popular seasonal launch can be an encouraging signal, but one day cannot answer either question on its own.
What Starbucks’ results showed before Pumpkin Spice season
The backdrop changed from a difficult FY2025 to stronger comparable sales in the first three quarters of FY2026. The figures below are company-reported; comparable sales measure eligible stores and are not the same as total company revenue.
#1 Best Overall
| Period and scope | Comparable sales | Transactions | Average ticket or revenue |
|---|---|---|---|
| FY2025, global | Down 1% for the full fiscal year | U.S. and North America transactions fell 4% for the year | Revenue grew 3% to $37.2 billion |
| Q4 FY2025, global | Up 1%, the first positive global comparable-sales quarter in seven quarters | U.S. transactions fell 1%; U.S. comparable sales were flat | Not stated in the cited results release |
| Q2 FY2026, North America | Up 7.1% | Up 4.4% | Not stated in the cited results release |
| Q3 FY2026, U.S. | Up 7.9% | Up 4.2% | Average ticket up 3.6% |
The Q2 figures come from Starbucks’ Q2 FY2026 results; the Q3 figures are for the quarter ended June 28, before the fall menu launch, and appear in its Q3 FY2026 results. Niccol called Q2 “the turn in our turnaround,” and later said Q3 results were proof of the plan’s progress. Those are management’s interpretations of the reported figures.
Why the different measures matter
- Transactions: More transactions indicate more purchases, rather than sales growth driven only by customers spending more per purchase. U.S. Q3 growth included increases in both transactions and average ticket.
- Comparable sales: These track eligible stores and can rise even when company-wide revenue moves differently.
- Revenue and profit: Starbucks reported Q3 consolidated net revenue down 1% to $9.3 billion. Reported International revenue fell 34%, primarily because Starbucks converted its China retail operations to a licensed joint-venture model. North America operating margin was 13.6%, up 30 basis points year over year; the company also cited labor investment and restructuring costs.
That context prevents two misleading readings: the revenue decline does not erase stronger U.S. store demand, and stronger comparable sales do not mean every part of the business or its profitability has recovered.

What Starbucks said about the 2026 fall launch
The fall menu began August 25, 2026. Returning drinks included the Pumpkin Spice Latte, Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew and Iced Pumpkin Cream Chai. New pumpkin beverages included Iced Pumpkin Cream Shaken Espresso, Iced Pumpkin Cream Matcha and Pumpkin Spice Chai. Starbucks said the beverage rollout reached more than 85 markets. These menu details establish what launched, not how much it sold; see the menu announcement.
On August 28, Starbucks said August 25 was its strongest fall launch day in U.S. and Canada history. It also reported record single-day sales for its Hedgehog Cake Pop. The announcement did not provide overall launch sales, transaction growth or a traffic comparison, so the superlative cannot be translated into a percentage lift or a dollar figure. The claim should be understood as Starbucks’ own description of the day, not a published measure of how much demand increased. Starbucks’ launch announcement contains the company’s account.

Why a record launch does not settle the turnaround question
Seasonal launches can generate a short-lived rush without demonstrating that customers keep returning in ordinary weeks. There is a relevant precedent: in 2025, Starbucks described the first week of its fall menu as its best-ever U.S. company-operated sales week, after six consecutive quarters of comparable-sales declines. The company memo still did not disclose specific sales or traffic figures, according to Axios’ September 1, 2025 report.
The 2025 announcement shows why a record-season headline needs follow-through data. It does not show that the 2026 launch had the same result or cause. For 2026, the published claim is about a single launch day, and the underlying sales and traffic comparison is not stated. The stronger evidence so far is the improvement in quarterly comparable sales before the season began.

What would make the recovery more convincing?
- Continued transaction growth: Future comparable-sales reports can show whether more customers are visiting, rather than relying chiefly on higher average tickets.
- Results beyond the launch window: Subsequent quarterly figures would indicate whether demand persisted after the seasonal rush.
- Profitability alongside sales: Margin performance helps show whether improved demand is translating into healthier operations.
- Clear comparisons: Disclosed launch-period sales or traffic figures would make it possible to assess the size of the seasonal lift rather than rely on a superlative.
At Investor Day, Starbucks described FY2028 goals of at least 3% global and U.S. comparable-sales growth, at least 5% consolidated revenue growth, and a 13.5%–15% non-GAAP operating margin. These are company forecasts, not evidence that the goals have been reached. The Investor Day release sets out those targets.
