The Breville Oracle Jet (BES985) is a premium espresso machine built to remove several fiddly steps from making coffee at home: it grinds, doses and tamps for you, offers guidance on shot extraction, and can texture milk automatically. That convenience is the point—but it still leaves you with choices about beans, grind settings, drinks and milk, and it takes up substantial counter space. Whether it is worth buying depends on how much you value that assisted workflow at its premium price.
What the Oracle Jet is—and what it automates
Breville describes the BES985 as an espresso machine with an integrated Baratza precision burr grinder and a professional-style 58 mm portafilter. Its central promise is to make a portafilter-based workflow more approachable without making every decision for you. Breville’s product page lists automatic grinding, dosing and tamping, Barista Guidance, and Auto MilQ milk texturing.
- Auto grind, dose and tamp: The machine handles these preparation steps. Breville lists a 22 g dose and 45 grinder settings; those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.
- Barista Guidance: The touchscreen can guide you when a shot appears over- or under-extracted. It assists with dialing in rather than removing the need to choose coffee and adjust settings.
- Auto MilQ: The machine can texture milk hands-free. Breville lists settings for dairy, soy, almond and oat milk.
The result is not a bean-to-cup machine that removes the portafilter workflow altogether: the Jet retains a 58 mm stainless-steel portafilter. It automates demanding parts of preparation while leaving room for user choices and adjustments.

Breville says the touchscreen includes café-style drink presets, including Cold Brew and Cold Espresso. The company claims its cold extraction takes under three minutes for Cold Brew and just over one minute for Cold Espresso. These are manufacturer-stated durations, not timings from independent testing.

For milk drinks, Auto MilQ provides a hands-free option, while the presets accommodate different listed milk types. Breville’s Auto MilQ page specifies adjustable milk temperatures from 104°F to 167°F and eight texture levels. Those ranges and settings are manufacturer specifications; the source does not establish that every milk type behaves identically at every setting.
How much control remains with you?
Automation reduces the number of manual preparation steps, but it does not make espresso completely decision-free. You still select beans and drinks, choose among grinder settings, and decide what sort of milk drink or texture you want. Barista Guidance can help interpret extraction, but the provided product details do not establish that it guarantees a preferred shot or replaces learning how changes affect taste.

For someone who enjoys the tactile work of weighing and distributing grounds, tamping, and manually steaming milk, the Jet’s main advantage may be less compelling. Someone who wants a portafilter machine but prefers assistance with repeatable preparation and milk texturing is more likely to appreciate its approach.

Breville’s US box listing includes a portafilter, a 480 ml (16.2 oz) stainless-steel milk jug, Knock Box 10, single-wall one- and two-cup baskets, and a cleaning kit. Breville notes a drip-tray guard for color machines. Contents can vary by region, finish, bundle or listing, so check the specific product page at purchase. A 58 mm Naked Portafilter is shown as a commonly purchased add-on, not as a standard included item.
What independent review coverage says
In a review published August 6, 2025, TechRadar says its reviewer used the machine at home for just over a month, making two drinks a day and trying dairy and plant-milk presets. The reviewer reported fast, flavorful espresso with little effort and identified the high price as a trade-off. That is one reviewer’s reported experience, not a controlled comparative test or a result from this article.

Who should consider the Oracle Jet?
- A good fit: You want an integrated grinder and a portafilter workflow, but want the machine to handle grinding, dosing, tamping and milk texturing. You also value touchscreen drink choices, including the listed cold options.
- Think twice: You are shopping primarily on price, have limited counter space, or prefer to control each preparation step yourself. The Jet’s size and automation may not match those priorities.
- Before ordering: Confirm the current price, regional contents and finish on the seller’s listing; measure the space available; and decide whether the guided, assisted workflow is the kind of espresso-making you want.
Manufacturer energy-efficiency claim
Breville claims the Oracle Jet is up to 32% more energy efficient than a Thermoblock heating system, based on the company’s internal benchmark testing as of November 2022. This is a manufacturer claim, not an independent efficiency test, and the stated comparison is specific to Breville’s benchmark.
